Jerry's lockout strategy could backfire

I think that this is not going to be a problem just in Charlotte if a lockout does happen.

THis is a reality that every NFL team will have to face if there is a lockout.

If you miss '11 then there are a lot of teams that are going to be in turmoil and stacked with questions. Fanbases that are turned off and pissed that a bunch of millionares and billionares couldn't agree on how much of the millions each of them get.

Superstars that are going to be on the backside of carreers in '12 and teams that are unprepared because '11 was locked out. Brady, Manning, McNabb, SS, R. Moss these are just a few guys off the top of my head that are going to be on the downside of 30+ in '12 and may still play but say they retire in '13 then that leaves some teams with gaping holes because of the loss of continuity from year to year progression of players and thier replacements.

It would definitely be bad for JR if a lockout does happen but I don't think that it would be a Panther specific problem.

We'd recover. But I am still pissed at JR for this bullsh*t. He tried so hard to make a point and told the owners to stick together and stay away from big signing but teams did it anyway and got better. Meanwhile, we had the biggest roster turnover in the NFL, we have the youngest roster in the NFL, and quite possibly one of the lowest payrolls (I don't feel like looking that one up).

More than worrying about the effects this season will have on the fanbase, I'm much more worried about what this strategy will do to our team long-term. DLo, TD, Matt Moore, Richard Marshall, Ryan Kalil, Charles Johnson, James Anderson, Tank are all playing on 1 year contracts. While JR was busy trying to make a statement, other teams we're locking their guys up or bringing in guys that could help for the long-term (Anquan, Brandon Marshall).

Even JR's good friend Robert Craft is negotiating a long-term deal with Brady... I know it's Brady but still... What about D-Lo? Matt Moore? I'd say those are pretty important guys... Kalil?

It's ridiculous what he's doing. And on top of that, I've kind of had a change of heart about Foxy over the last year. I was all ready for him to be fired the last 2 years, but the longer he's stuck around the more I've realized we don't have it so bad. I don't want to see another team get him and go further than we did...

I think we'll always have a solid fanbase, and we'll recover from a lockout if there is one... We won't be happy, but we'll welcome the team and the game back. I'm more concerned about our success after the lockout if there is one. The way we're currently set up, we could be bad for awhile after this year.

The amount of young players on the roster with one year deals is my concern. While JR might be preparing to save money during a lockout, the team could very easily lose alot of their young core when it is over. I think that whole part of this unknown is what really sucks. Had it not been for the looming labor issue, I could still see the Panthers would have cleaned house like they did but they most likely would have locked up some of the young guys - escpecially Kalil. In the past that has been the teams way. Sometimes they do it during the season but I dont see that occuring either.

I don't see how anything good can come out of it - especially in a market as fickle as Charlotte. However, sadly, I would bet money that one is coming.

People forget that Richardson walked away from an NFL career over a measly $250. If he was willing to quit football over that, than I can only imagine what he is willing to do over the millions/billions involved today.

I can only guess he's willing to sacrifice short term losses for long term gains. Like you have questioned though, there is no guarantee Charlotte would ever recover.

Whachoo talkin' 'bout, Willis?

J-Rich is a big picture guy. The problem with his picture, though, IMHO, is that it's too damned big. Panthers fans---particularly, casual fans---don't give a panther's ass about the particulars of the NFL FO. Like most fanbases, the bottom line is winning. We want so see a good product on the field (a field with a giant Panthers logo in the middle, I might add), and have a realisitic shot at going to the big dance every year. We don't want there to be any hint of bankrupting our success in order to grandstand and/or make a point, or sacrifice our hopes and dreams of a Lombardi trophy becuase of some intangible, perverse principle born of mega millionaires who are arguing about splitting up their money-filled pies---green pies baked with the key ingredients of the working fans' blood sweat and tears.

So, yeah, the champion of the NFL money moguls might have a little problem with his strategy if the walkout becomes a reality.

If true about the money angle (& I am not disagreeing), I wonder how Richardson will be able to defend & reconcile that with his promise for the Panthers to have won a superbowl within 10 years? Like just because it hasn't happened he has said screw that timeline?

I don't think what you are seeing was any part of a long range plan. JR probably thought he was going to die two years ago. Came back from the dead, saw his feuding sons tearing the franchise apart (people taking sides between the two), saw the impending lockout and figured he'd take a hit, get rid of Fox and start fresh, now that he expects to live that long.

IF there has been no agreement on a CBA by mid-season look for some contracts to get done for some of these guys. As much as JR wants to posture and try to help the owners hold position over the NFLPU, he won't decimate his own team to do it.

IF he was willing to let all of those guys walk just to prove a point, I might be interested in becoming a fan of another team. That would be a HUGE FU to the fan base. I just can't see him going that far with it.
