Matt Moore

I thought Jimmy Clausen was very impressive last night considering it was his NFL debut.

I believe he is really going to be something real special, given a little time.

I feel Matt Moore did a good job considering he had blitzers in his face most of the time.

I was listening to Frank Garcia ,on todays Frank and Buck radio show and he said the Panthers did not scheme to pick up the blitzes in the Ravens game, the way they would in a regular season game.

Consequently, the nonblitz pickup planning permitted the pressure on Moore, thereby not allowing him time to throw and causing a fumble by a blind side hit.

While I agree for the most part, everyone in the stadium except Matt Moore saw that blitz coming that caused him to fumble. The Ravens made no attempt to disguise it before the snap. It was obviously coming.

Keep in mind too that Clausen was facing a bunch of Raven's 2nd stringers. I'd be interested to see if he could hang with starters.

Clausen wasn't playing with the first string offense either though. Do you really believe our second team offense is better than their second team defense? If you ask me they have a lot more going for them than we do when it comes to the second string. Clausen looked good. I would be willing to bet he would have been just as good if not better running with the first team and not having to deal with the crappy weather and grip on the ball.

Now that I am home from work I want to comment on something that I keep reading.

People are saying in one thread that the defenders that Clausen was seeing were guys who normally wouldn't even play during the regular season. No offense but if not for injuries, the same would be said about the current starting secondary for the Ravens. Moore should have exposed them.

Also, everyone is saying that Moore had no time to throw the ball because of constant blitzing. Clausen had little time to throw as well because of the blitzing, but the difference is Clausen determined who the blitzers were before the snap and not just knew he had to get rid of the ball quickly, he did get rid of the ball quickly.

There was a play last night where my fiance who barely watches football called that the Ravens were about to blitz Moore. It looked like everyone on the field and everyone at the game knew a blitz was coming but for whatever reason Moore just never read it.

It seems that locally people aren't as high hopes for Clausen as other fan bases are about their young QBs. New York thinks the world of Mark Sanchez and Detroit thinks the world of Matt Stafford. Both of them never looked as poised and confident as Clausen did last night.

Carolina should be beyond happy to have him on their roster and the fans should be happy knowing that the future at the QB position here seems to be in good hands down the road.

Oh I'm extremly happy! But why can't you like both QB's? I do...I'm excited about where we will probably end up with Clausen but I'm equally excited about where Matt Moore can take us NOW!

Well if I was on the sideline watching all those blitzes as Clausen was, I can pretty much guarantee you I would be watching for blitzes when I went in.

Clausen certainly looks the part but I was not impressed with the passing. The Moore pass was almost picked off and against a stronger secondary, probably would have been, the pass against the grain was bone-headed, The leFell pass in the end zone should have been a litttle higher as he had the height advantage over the defender and while the receiver slipped on the INT, it wasn't the best thrown ball anyway.

And I agree, the fans should be happy knowing that the future at the QB position here seems to be in good hands down the road. Matt Moore will do a fine job:thumbsup:

the Ravens may have been thin in the secondary.

as for that meaning Moore should have exposed them then.....well, if he had Steve Smith he probably would have. Instead, he had a bunch of rookies and guys that were inactive most games last season playing WR.

Moore looked pretty good considering the D he saw up front and the fact Gross killed his drive when he got warm.

So you are seeing that Clausen was smart enough to adjust before he even got in understanding that the Ravens were bringing the heat? Why wasn't Moore smart enough to understand that as it was happening. He wasn't making any pre-snap reads or checking down when the WRs weren't getting open.

The Moore pass would have only been picked off if Moore bobbled it anymore. I doubt the defender could have come down with it at his angle with the way the ball was thrown. And I agree with you, it wasn't the best thrown ball, but by no means if the WR falls would that ever be an interception in the NFL during the regular season. That same WR may be one of the guys they cut soon. You can say what you want about Moore being the future, he is either going to be our long term backup or a starter somewhere else. If they won't pay a great coach in John Fox top coach money, why would they pay a guy like Matt Moore starter money?

Give Steve Smith to Jimmy Clausen and he would have exposed them more as well. I don't understand the argument on that one. People keep saying it but it wasn't like Clausen had Smith out there and Moore didn't. They had the same weapons at WR.

Moore saw a different defensive unit. There may have been a couple of guys for the Ravens that were out there for both QBs but overall those were two completely different squads they faced from the Ravens.

For example, against the Ravens starters Jimmy might not have gotten as lucky with that screen pass. Moore might not have caught his tipped ball. etc.

It is not a concept where people are just picking on Clausen. Hardy needs to work against starters before people buy into the hype. Both showed promise and looked great......but you do have to acknowledge the difference in opponents when comparing them to guys that saw 1st string.

    • Strange, every news article and tweet I just searched all mentioned waivers. It is definitely his sixth year of at least 6 games. All I was trying to think of earlier was at the vet min could he beat out Bryce in camp next year lol. He's kinda got the old Darnold issue where he can obviously launch deep balls and qb run at a level Bryce will never achieve, but it sounds like he would be content being like a Josh Allen backup who doesn't throw the whole game plan out the window if he has to come in for a series or two. If we had him and for some reason still wanted to start Bryce he would kinda do what Justin Fields was doing the other night with Dangeruss, coming in for designed runs and maybe some play action/triple option rpo things to go deep. That would be so obvious and sad though. At least Russ can still sling it 40 yards in the air with a flick of the wrist
    • Too late to edit above but the quote is from this Diane Russini article in the Athletic: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5941684/2024/11/23/russinis-what-im-hearing-the-day-the-jets-fell-apart-and-the-broncos-rallied-belichick-best-fits/ Okay.. there you have sorry I left that out the first post.  Also waivers keep the contract intact. That is the major difference in released and waived. It's all in that link from the other post.
    • Okay so I am reading something in The Athletic and it says that Jones had to pass through waivers. So I don't know. I looked this stuff up when we were number one there all offseason and I thought it said 4 years in the league got you vested, as they call it.  Vested gets you out of waivers as I understood it. I probably got something wrong, but when I think about the slack quality of journalism these days I wonder about that. So I went and looked, again. Well, well.  For everyone: "When a player has accrued at least four seasons in the NFL, they are considered a vested veteran. When these vested veterans get cut, they are released and their contract is terminated. When a vested veteran is released, they are an unrestricted free agent that can sign with any NFL team, and the team that released them doesn’t need to provide any additional compensation." It runs it all down here, where the quotes came from: https://www.profootballnetwork.com/waived-vs-released-nfl/ As far as Jones, the team turned down his 5th year option so I knew that meant he had 4 years in, because they re-signed him anyway, after turning down the much cheaper extra year.  The Athletic is owned by the New York Times so I shouldn't be surprised. That paper was an institution once upon a time but they let their standards go.
