Matt Moore

deserves his own thread if Jimmy Clausen does!

Yes, I know his stats only show 3/7 for 32 yds but if not for

Gross's propensity to hold at the most inopportune times, he would have been 5/7 for 68 yards. The first holding negated a 17 yard pass which would have put the Panthers at the Ravens 16. The second hold negated a 19 yard pass on a 3rd and 15 to the Ravens 18. In both instances, the Panthers would have had a first down in the red zone. At worst, they still would have had an opportunity for a FG.

Clausen is getting a lot of attention today but it looks to me like Moore has pretty much picked up were he left off last year.

I thought he was 4/7?

Either way, what surprised me last night is that Clausen looked more poised. It looked to recognize the blitz better and either check out of the call or hit his hot read. Moore just looked shell shocked when they came after him. Now, maybe he just wasn't expecting it as most defenses play very vanilla in the preseason and you usually don't see blitzing like that in the preseason. Clausen probably benefited from seeing Moore face sell out blitzes and came in prepared to face the same.

Clausen's getting the attention because he's the golden boy that fell in the draft.

In the eyes of the media, last night was more about Clausen's first preseason game and the introduction of the Ravens new offense. Clausen's poise was great.

Moore is Moore. Not many qbs do well when the Ravens blitz almost every play. Especially in preseason when Fox and company aren't game planning around them.

Keep in mind too that Clausen was facing a bunch of Raven's 2nd stringers. I'd be interested to see if he could hang with starters.

I thought the Ravens had most of their starting D in for the entire first half? Could be wrong but I know the starting secondary was still playing in the 4th quarter due to all the injuries they had.

they are thin in the secondary b/c of injury. Not sure the guys playing w/ the first unit are who they plan to have come regular season.

THAT is what is truly concerning. There's a good chunk of that Ravens secondary that we saw last night running with the 1s and 2s who probably won't even make the regular season roster, yet our young WRs still couldn't get any separation.

For the most part I think separation was fine...the big problem was the Defensive Linemen in Moores face the entire night! I don't think I have watched a preseason game with that many blitz packages set up! It seemed like they blitz on every down...poor Matt didn't really have time to survey the field; which makes Jimmy's outting even more impressive! Ops no one open down field, pocket closing in...lets shovel pass it!!! Loved it!

Clausen will probably get the same praise next week. Moore will see an aggressive and possibly the best D in the NFL in the Jets next week. Rex will bring heat also with his studs. With no Smitty, there ain't much concern in what you dial up. Then Clausen will come in to play the scrubs.

    • Respectfully, I completely disagree. Last year we were:  32nd in Sacks. 32nd in Turnovers.  32nd in Rushing TDs allowed  29th in Scoring.  We were absolutely atrocious on defense last year and that was with a full stable of weapons in Derek Brown, Frankie Luvu and Brian Burns that played all 17 games.  Using yards per game as a metric to guage our success lacks the context that because our offense was so inept teams were not driving the length of the field, they were starting at their 40-50 yard line.  This year, our Defense ranks:  31st in Sacks. Tied for 19th in Turnovers  31st in Rushing TDs allowed 32nd in Scoring  His defense fails to get pressure, fails to turn the ball over and fails to stop the run. Three things you absolutely have to do to be successful in the NFL.  Denver meanwhile has not missed a beat without him.  If another team wants to hire him as a HC and the Panthers get two 3rds for it I'll wish him the best and pack his bags myself.
