My Musings...

Samuel L. Jackson

Recommended Posts

Here are my initial reactions to last night's action... I haven't gone back to rewatch the film, but here goes...

1. Greg Hardy is going to be good... very good...

2. Eric Norwood also looked good in the spot duty I watched him on...

3. Jarrett would have caught the TD that LaFell dropped, in my opinion... Jarrett has a more solid frame, and part of LaFell's problem on that play was that he got outpositioned physically...

4. Moore looked okay, but I think all of our first stringers had a bit of the jitters (see Gross)...

5. I was really impressed with Clausen, as I figured I would be since I had him as the highest rated QB in the draft... I know this will sound crazy, but the way he carried himself and called out the defense, as well as his motion in the pocket and his progressions reminded me a LOT of a certain QB in New England... No, I'm not going to say that he is going to be that good of a player, and I don't want him starting for us this year, but he is going to be very very good at the pro level...

6. Eric Moore may make the team over someone like Hilee Taylor... He was in on a lot of plays while he was in there...

7. Nick Hayden still does a lot more than people here give him credit for... and he just might make the team again...

8. Fiammetta impressed me... I think he has the starting job on lock, despite the praises of Jackson...

9. Our CBs, not named Gamble, don't need give up as much position or pillow to opposing WRs...

10. Kenny Moore and Dwayne Jarrett will make the team... David Gettis will be put on the PS...

11. We really need to work on our Center/QB, Center/holder exchanges...

12. Tyrell Sutton makes the team again... Not so sure that Vaughan or Savage do... Vaughan has the frame, but I was unimpressed with some of his instincts...

13. I think Armanti Edwards will be alright... We are going to have to be patient, but if Smith takes him under his wing, he will be able to correct a lot of his bad techniques... The first thing he needs to do is make himself smaller on the field and not run so upright and uptight...

14. Our D Line is going to be just fine, and will surprise a lot of people...

15. Our LB corps still concerns me a little... We don't have much depth, and although I think Beason, Connor, and Anderson will be fine, we are going to need our DBs and DL to pick up a lot of the LBs slack... Thankfully, in our system and scheme, they should be alright...

16. Greg Hardy is going to be good... very good...

This is a good point I have not thought about... if Armanti will listen to Smith and try and emulate his play, it could be invaluable to him.

Plus, Smitty knows what it's like to come in as a small receiver and to play big. Remember, Smith came in and didn't exactly light it up for a couple of years as a WR and he played that position in college! AE will take some time and Smitty will get him right.

I'm really excited about Clausen... but for another reason than what most people may think. Matt Moore is clearly the starter for this season, and most people are excited about Clausen for the future potential he adds to the roster... but I'm more excited about him being a QB for the Panthers because we actually have a solid starter and backup now. Something it seems we've never had. So injury wise, to the quarterbacks anyway, I'm very comfortable where they're at.

I said aloud at two different points "Holy poo! He looks just like Tom Brady back there"...

A lot of it has to do with his mannerisms, and the way he makes his reads pre-snap and as the play unfolds...

One thing a lot of people always hate on Brady for is his seeming arrogance and cockyness... The same things are what people say about Clausen...

I've never had a hate for Brady, and I actually like him a lot... Same goes for Clausen...

In addition to his ability to read the defense pre snap and adjust the offense, he also seems to have the knack for making something out of nothing when the play breaks down. On a 1-10 scale I'd give his first NFL debut(in limited time) a 7.5-8. Yeh he threw a pick but to his credit K. Moore slipped. Didn't really notice the Ravens slipping all over the place, but on multiple occasions multiple Panthers were slipping and falling. What the hell, did Baltimore replace our cleats with ballet flats before the game???

I agree with everything except the Greg Hardy comment and the last part of the Clausen comment. I think Hardy needs to go against starting OL/QB before I pass judgement. I also want Jimmy Clausen to start if he gives us the best chance to win...which I think he does.

Matt Moore looked lost last night and still does a terrible job of finding where the blitz is coming from. Clausen was going against a 2nd team last night but it was still the same scheme and I don't remember a time where the blitz got to him and forced him into a mistake. The pick he threw wasn't his fault and he made throws last night that you rarely saw out of either Delhomme or Moore. Very impressive considering it was his first NFL game.

    • There's some big assumptions in here - first, I think Canales HAS helped Bryce a poo ton. To pretend he hasn't is asinine. Has he fixed him?  I mean, the dude looks like he could perhaps be a backup or low-end starter now, whereas he looked like he didn't belong in the NFL a year ago. You're talking about a coach that brought one of the worst NFL QBs of all time to a point where he may actually be a low-end starter. That IS impressive. Second, the bolded. Come on - given the offense, the dude is far from "trending towards bust." He definitely needs work but he's shown an impressive ability to get open. He's contributing to an anemic offense. The dude is our leading receiver (though he'll be #2 in yardage by end of season by a little, as Thielen does better per game).  As to his coaching, he had this team competing and believing against 3 of the better teams in the NFL, despite the lack of talent, and despite our QB situation.  Yes, things fell apart vs DAL, and he was outcoached. But that will happen with young coaches IMO.  I don't think it indicates he cant' be better. The idea of "pulling off the bandage" is ridiculous. Who would want to coach here if we fired this guy after one season?
    • Whatever they are in totality the cowboys are beat up all to hell on both sides of the ball and even that was too much for lil Bryce to overcome.  Bryce defenders have to hype up every other team and trash every other part of the panthers just because of the situation they’ve put themselves in.
    • JB had a first round grade in the eyes of a lot scouts based on HIS TALENT LEVEL. If not for the injury he would have gone higher in the draft, possibly between the middle and the end of round 1. To get him just before the 50th pick is a steal. He'd be on a 4 year deal. You can't even renegotiate until the end of the season 3. You're basically paying him nothing for 3 seasons. I don't buy into all back are interchangeable. No they're not. You have average backs, good backs, then your great-exceptional backs. The latter category doesn't grow on trees. If a back is special it pays to keep them. The key is knowing the difference between the first two categories and the third one.
