Panthers will trade for a WR...

90% of the time I am in agreement with Zod but this thread shocked me.

Trading for a WR makes zero sense for about 100 reasons but let me hit the big ones:

1) Carolina FO just doesn't do these types of things

2) Player for Player trades rarely happen in NFL.

3) Sutton has almost zero trade value (maybe a slight upgrade in a late round draft position).

4) RBs just don't have much trade value in NFL. Especially UDFAs.

5) We just invested a ton of draft picks and money at WR. FO won't turn their back on their investment quickly.

6) WR depth is actually one of our biggest long term strengths on this team. I actually do believe that.

7) Many WRs take a while to develop. Look at NYG Steve Smith, Mike Sims-Walker, Antonio Bryant, Sidney Rice, Robert Meachem. All did nothing the first 2 to 5 years before breaking out. Give them time, they can develop.

Yes yes and yes. Great post. Zod you have to understand who you are talking about. The panthers. We actually have a lot invested in young recievers(two second round picks and a third rounder) this was edwards and lafells first game!! I honestly this young reciever group can collabritively make a solid second option. And we so easily forget our tight ends will be more involved this year and gary barnidge is a great receiving threat.

Zod I'm very disappointed with you. Don't you think we should give our guys more than ONE preseason game to prove themselves? A few things to consider:

1. For a lot of the guys, it was their first NFL game. They will look better once they adjust.

2. Rainy conditions = poor passing game.

3. O-line was pathetic in pass protection all night. That certainly affects the passing game.

4. Steve Smith's absence is a big deal.

5. We clearly passed the ball a lot more last night than we will during the regular season. When the real games start we will pound that rock all day on the ground and pass only when we have to, or when we're set up for a good play-action. There will be a lot less pressure on the receivers once Smith, Stewart and Otah are back.

I still think LaFell is going to be a very good receiver.

We don't know for certain that we don't have a number one receiver to groom. Its a little bit early to give up on some of our current crop of receivers. I would actually like to see what the new guys can do before we start talking about trading them. Some of these guys played their first ever NFL game last night. Steve Smith didn't do that well in his first preseason game at least not as a receiver anyway, why would we expect Lafell or Edwards to do that much better?

Dwayne Jarrett is going to be a solid number 2 and is way better then anyone we could get for Sutton or Goodson.

So Jarrett will be a solid #2 huh? Not a liquid #2 like after a night of hot wings and cold beer?

Either way, sh*t is sh*t.

This situation is made even more sad by the fact that there were a few decent WR's out there in free agency but the Panthers refused to put out any money. With the bread and butter of the offense being the run, I don't see how you break up "double trouble". The only exceptable and reasonable options to trade would be Goodson or Sutton. Neither of which I think would net us a #2 caliber reciever.

I can't believe everyone is jumping to conclusion on ALL of our receivers after one preseason game. The only player that didn't look that great, and was given a chance, was AE. The QBs didn't make the best throws and when they did it was to RBs and TEs.

Give the Newbies a chance.

I'm not gving up on them either. I'm just agreeing with Zod's point that the Panthers have never been able to fill that #2 WR spot with a future canidate. Moose did a great job but we all knew he was at the end of his career. Kerry Colbert was supposed to be the answer, then Drew Carter, then Dwayne Jarrett. See the pattern? I really think Lafell has something to offer and he will be a dominate reciever, but I think it's gonna take time. They need someone now.

If we trade D-Will I swear.....only player I would trade him for is Chris Johnson or Peyton Manning.

DWill would command a top 5 receiver. He has been a top 5 running back for the last 2 years and is looking to be even better this year. Not to mention he has been extremely durable for a RB of his size and speed. The only WRs that I would trade DWill for are likely untouchable as well. I don't see him going anywhere. Sutton also isn't going to get us a receiver any better than the guys we currently have IMO. I think we need to stand pat with what we have and develop LaFell...he has the tools to be good.

DOnt forget who we have on the team for these young guys to learn from.. If just 2 of them turn into 90% of what smitty is..well that just makes it worth it, even if we are .200 this year. Not to mention we got them young and wide receivers play for 10+ years most of the time.

Zod, I could've sworn you were the one making the rule about the "NO CHICKEN LITTLE" threads.

We've got a guy named Steve Smith on the roster, who didn't show any signs of decline last year, and I'd say your panicking about LaFell because of that one drop he had, no?
