Panthers will trade for a WR...

90% of the time I am in agreement with Zod but this thread shocked me.

Trading for a WR makes zero sense for about 100 reasons but let me hit the big ones:

1) Carolina FO just doesn't do these types of things

2) Player for Player trades rarely happen in NFL.

3) Sutton has almost zero trade value (maybe a slight upgrade in a late round draft position).

4) RBs just don't have much trade value in NFL. Especially UDFAs.

5) We just invested a ton of draft picks and money at WR. FO won't turn their back on their investment quickly.

6) WR depth is actually one of our biggest long term strengths on this team. I actually do believe that.

7) Many WRs take a while to develop. Look at NYG Steve Smith, Mike Sims-Walker, Antonio Bryant, Sidney Rice, Robert Meachem. All did nothing the first 2 to 5 years before breaking out. Give them time, they can develop.

Problem is we need to start grooming a potential number 1 now, time is running out.

Don't freak out man, time isn't running out. I'm confident that Fox and co. will find a suitable #2 out of the group we have... and a #1 in the next two drafts. Steve Smith still has a good four or five seasons left in him... and even if he does lose a step or two in those four or five seasons, he'll still be considered one of the top ten receivers in the league, just like Randy Moss.

If you wanted Clayton from Baltimore, you might actually get him for a player like CJ Wilson.

With that said, someone will emerge from the WR group and be a serviceable #2.

And Sutton isn't going anywhere as long as Fox is here.

Good point, the Ravens are hurting in the secondary... I'd guess they would place a high value on a guy like CJ Wilson.

Everette Brown and the 2011 3rd round pick to San Diego for Vincent Jackson.

This will give the Chargers something for Jackson and allow them to have an option to step in for Merriman if he continues to sit out.

The problem here is just like any other real option, money. Would the Panthers be willing to pay Jackson the money and the contract he is wanting in order to play in 2010?

We should've traded for Boldin when he was available. I was thinking last night during the game - for all the great draft picks we've made as far as value - Greg Hardy for example... We've really spent years neglecting positions when the value was there or bombed out on it when we did take a pick there - WR for example.

We don't take many WRs compared to other positions, but when we do, it seems like the FO is determined to make that pick work even when it is clear it's not going to pan out -Colbert was here about 2 years too long and Jarrett as well. Yet, with it being clear that there was no #2 option, we sat back and watched the available guys get picked over.

Clausen was a good value at where we got him, but we should've addressed WR first, and there was WRs there to be had who wouldn't have been a reach.

Also, we never bring in a proven, veteran free-agent to shore up the WR corps. Again, Boldin would've been a perfect compliment to Smitty. Brandon Marshall, I'm not sure he could've co-existed with Smitty, but we didn't even look into it. Vincent Jackson is still out there, but I doubt he's moved. All these guys have already produced and it wasn't just a one-year wonder thing. It's disappointing that we're in this position yet again.

I doubt we can move anyone for any WR of value at this point. I wouldn't mind bringing in whoever is cut from the Bengals WRs, b/c they are SUPER DEEP, but other than claiming someone off waivers, we aren't making a player-for-player deal, it isn't Hurney's style.

Plus, I think with LaFell and Edwards, Hurney and Fox are going to give them every opportunity to prove themselves this year so they don't look bad for taking them.

Its looking more and more likely to me. The obvious downfall of this squad this year and years to come is the lack of a legit receiver not named Steve Smith. No one likes to talk about it, but Smith is on the downward slope of his career. He will be losing a step from here on out starting last season.

BULLSHIT! :icon_bs:

How could you say that?!?!?

Would be nice to trade Sutton to Green Bay for one of their WRs. They locked up Driver/Jennings and have Grant as their only reliable back. They also didn't touch on a RB till later on in the draft or pick up any free agents, so the spot behind Grant is wide open. Although, I'm sure it would take more than Sutton to pry James Jones or Nelson from them but man that would be cool to make them pay for the mistake of cutting Sutton.

Seeing as though GB cut him last year, I doubt they would trade someone to get him back. They already know what he can and can't do.

i can see a trade happening of one of our RB's...but not this year. Carolina has a history of using of running backs and then replacing them when they fall off, without even a second guess. (davis, foster, hoover...etc) which is pretty much standard procedure, but we also havent had a duo like these two before..hell i think its safe to say no team has

The GREAT thing about THIS YEARS team, is that we have ALOT of talent, and that makes next year even more interesting in my opinion. Fox and company put together a solid foundation that can be built upon next season. ( and no..im not a john fox ass kisser, just happen to think he has done an "ok" job so far, at least he isnt jim zorn.)

if we have another 2000 yard season from our running back tandem, could you imagine what 2 decent wide recievers could accomplish?? we'd be unstoppable. but dont look for it in 2010

As soon as Smith comes back, the passing game is going to look totally different. I didnt see Smith losing anything last season, he was still beastly as ever, it was just that Jake was fuging horrible the whole season. We all saw what happened as soon as Moore took over. Smith and Moore had at least one long bomb for a TD every game. Smith may have lost a step....all that means is that he goes from the fastest guy in the league to one of the fastest. Im of the opinion that Smith still has pretty fresh legs for a 30 something guy. His first couple of seasons he didnt play much WR, and he also missed a whole season because of the broken leg....I think that we will be OK.

But yeah, we shoulda signed T.O.
