Answer this question honestly....

I'm not gonna diss on the guy. He was a quarterback for what? 4 years? Now he's coming into the NFL (Pro level football) and is learning two new roles, not only Punt/Kick returning, but also wide receiver. Yeah, he needs some cleaning up and what not, but he looked good. He seems to have the fielding of punts down pretty good, and you could clearly see he's trying to learn how to read the opponents flying at him after he catches the ball when returning. His receiving skills need some improvement. But all in all, he definitely wasn't the low-light of the game by any means.

If cuts were today, I would say he's cut given he wasn't a high draft pick. Just because he didn't muff a punt doesn't mean he'll be a good PR. We all know catching the punt is only one part, getting yards is the other. Edwards looks for the hole to accelerate through instead of accelerating and then finding a hole. Until he gets the difference, he's not going to do well.

As a WR, he looked okay. That I can be a bit more forgiving because there's a heck of a lot more to be a good WR than a retunman.

No he wouldn't make the squad but apply that to other guys as well. We would be cutting Jordan Gross, Duke Robinson, Everette Brown, John Beason, and Captain Munnerlyn as well using that criteria.

Why would you cut veterans who have proven themselves?

Its a tough business. Rookies have a limited window to prove their worth. AE has in no way done that. Tell me based on the opportunities they have had why you would keep AE over David Gettis.

It's pointless to debate a hypothetical question such as this, especially because the Panthers drafted Edwards for his potential. They don't expect him to make an immediate impact, so why even debate this question?

I still think he will make an immediate impact at returner. I'm so tired of all these haters on here. He looked slow, he danced around too much, he cant catch, waste of a pick, blah blah blah. I know a lot of guys are just trolling but for those who arent why are you giving up on somebody after the 1ST Preseason game?

Lots of people avoiding the question here. Its real simple.

If cuts had to be made today, would AE make the squad if he was an UFA?

Based on this lone performance? No, not IMO. Fortunately we have 3 more pre-season games to get a better look.

Unfortunately, it won't matter, they're not gonna cut a guy that they used a 2nd round pick on to get.

He's the punt returner...and David Gettis is just a player that gets in the way of him returning punts.

He looks like he's thinking to much.

With what he's going through, that is to be expected. They are throwing too much at him at once. I don't care how good of a football player a person can be, having to learn two new positions at the same time can't be easy.

Lord knows the fans ain't going to give you 1 inch of room, cause you were drafted.

Yes, he'd make the cut.

Because you said that if he was a UDFA what would we do and I applied the same criteria to the veterans as well. Now you change it and include playing history for the veterans without considering draft status for Edwards. Edwards won't be cut because he was a 3rd round draft pick. So if you can selectively use criteria to make a judgment we can apply it across the board or not at all.

At this point I would keep Gettis and Edwards. They both will make first cuts no problem. By the end of August we will have to make the tough cuts.

draft status is not pro performance. Equating the two is silly.

And pro performance is not pro potential. Equating the two is equally silly.

If we'd drafted a legitimate receiver who was playing like this, even that wouldn't be worth asking if he'd make the team -- because all rookies are allowed some degree of a learning curve.

As you might expect, Edwards' curve is a bit longer, considering he's learning new positions.

A better question might be this: If Edwards was undrafted and was brought in to immediately contribute as a returner and receiver, would he be cut? Of course he would.
