Lafell has won starting job

Listen folks. Who starts tonight means next to nothing. The guy starting at quarterback tonight had a lousy preseason last year but played well in games when given the opportunity.

The guy who plays the best tonight at receiver will move up in the rotation for next week but that is it. He won't be guaranteed a starting spot based on anything that happens tonight. I don't knw why folks are making so much of this.

If I had to guess, none of the receivers will look all that good and our defense will play better than our offense particularly against their defense. One thing in our favor is apparently we are one of only a few teams who are going all out in pads for the past 2 weeks. It accounts for the injuries and number of players sitting out so far. It may mean we are more physical tonight compared to teams doing walk throughs all training camp.

Amen.I doubt the coaches even know at this point who will be the 2 receiver.I do think they will give LaFell the nod on a toss up.

As far as post defending DJ,yes he is still young but the fact is he has had problems learning the playbook and running crisp routes...the facts are the facts.

who says he has trouble learning the playbook and all this? (any more than other young players). The same people who said Matt Moore didn't know the playbook or work hard? I have hard time imagining Foxy putting him in for huge 3rd down plays if he was as dumb as people imply. All he needs is a chance and then we can make the call on him....playing behind Smitty and Moose with Jake throwing the rock ain't much of a chance.

I like LaFell a lot. I think he's got a lot of tools to be a good WR. However, I simply do not trust WR's that don't have jersey #'s in the 80's. There is just something wrong with that that I am unable to out my finger on.

LaFell might start. He won't start over Jarrett. With Smitty out, you simply have to name 2 starters. Fox is old school....even if he likes LaFell's progress I don't see him giving the rook the nod over Jarrett preseason game 1. Not b/c Fox won't play rooks but b/c Fox still makes guys earn it when they have competition and the rookie doesn't have an automatic job.

that is messageboard talk. All the beat writers who attend pracitce over the course of seasons have reported that Jarrett looks good in practice. Coaches talk also. He just has never been able to get on the field and produce. Sure, saying he looks good doesn't mean he doesn't have areas he needs to work on......but there have been fairly consistant reports about him in practice.

I think it is safe bet that if Steve Smith hadn't made that smart remark to him Jarrett would recieve 35.8% less poo on this board. More focus would be put on Jake, Fox's 2 WR sets, and the fact there was no realistic way Fox was gonna move him ahead of Moose (while Moose is healthy and on the roster).

Right. We drafted a highly touted, big time WR in the 2nd with the plan that he would sit and rot for four years behind Moose. This is all according to plan and this is Jarrett's year (again).

Jarrett has great hands and .. that's it. Not a smart player, not a fast player, no special teams ability, flat out refuses to rise up (and you better believe he had the FO pulling like Hell for him). He's a really skinny TE.

As for Smith giving him crap.. why do you think that is? How many other receivers, other teammates for that matter, has Smith ripped in public? He's beaten up more people than he's called out.

Acting like poor, poor DJ is being held back by a stupid or malicious FO is pretty sad.

but again, you are saying Jarrett should have earned a spot ahead of Moose/Smitty. Wasn't gonna happen regardless.

Jarrett only played here 1 season and was a super young rookie at that. Moose was brough back b/c they hadn't found anyone from 2005-2007 that worked out.

LaFell may be better and he may start against NYG....but Jarrett will play with the first unit tonight. That I am certain of.

Hilarious guys. I just checked Yasinskas' blog post on espn.com and he made no mention of Opening Day. I have never said LaFell won't be a starter later in the season. My entire point in the signature bet was that he wouldn't start on OPENING DAY. How difficult is that for you guys to understand? He could even start Week 2, doesn't matter, I only made reference to one game: the opener vs. the Giants.

PLENTY of rookies have started under John Fox, it's just on OPENING DAY where the list of names shrinks considerably.

By the way, if you weren't one of the 2 people that officially took the bet against me, why are you even commenting? If you didn't have the balls to bet this weeks ago like the few that did, then trying to comment on this NOW is weaksauce.

Thank you. I have rarely ever seen a rookie be named a starter before the first preseason game unless he was a first round pick.
