Charlotte Media Wants Clausen To Fail

Or the Panthers get off to a bad start and the playoffs look out of reach, do you think they will not throw Clausen in there to get him some real reps?

Moore gets injured and is going to miss more then two to three weeks, do you think they will not go with Clausen? I understand if he has to miss a quarter or just a game or two they go with Cantwell. But, not for anything other than short term.

Panthers lock down a playoff spot and the offensive line continues to look bad, do you think for the last two or three games that the Panthers don't give Clausen some time in there as well as Cantwell?

Chances this season that Clausen gets some playing time is far better than the chance he gets none at all.

If the Panthers get off to a bad start, is it because Moore sucks, or for other reasons? Do most teams pull their starting QB when they're out of the playoff contention in order to let the backups get practice (never seen it happen with Raiders, Chiefs, Lions, etc.)?

Cantwell has looked better in camp right now so he'd be the likely candidate to come in for a game or two if Moore was injured. The only way Cantwell would be pulled is if he plays like crap, thus letting Clausen start.

Why would the offensive line "continue to look bad"? But even if they did, why would they take out the QB? When has GB or the Steelers taken their starting QB out when their offensive line looked bad?

Clausen's chance of starting is MUCH lower than his chance of riding the bench.

Would this be the same Clausen that on things like NFLN, ESPN etal have said the guy is nothing more than the 3rd QB on this roster?

Cut the BS, the guy isn't ready and odds are will never be anything but a backup in this league.

LOL, someone is a little butt hurt at the Clausen attention. Pretty sad, jealousy is for females dude.

Jimmy has yet to wrassle the number 2 spot away from Cantwell. Not sure why we are even discussing him starting. Cantwell has the strongest arm on the team and would get the nod currently if Moore was to be benched.

The Steelers couldn't last year because they were fighting to get into the playoffs. Different dynamic. If the team isn't going anywhere and has no shot at making the playoffs, while let your starter continue to get killed? And by saying the offensive line has looked bad, just about every update I read on Twitter or on these forums talks of our defense having no issue at all getting to our QBs or preventing the rbs from gaining anymore than a yard or two. Its sounded terrible.

Clausen will ride the bench to start the season, and it might last all season, but my point was to show people who don't want to think that there are so many possibilities for something to happen that would allow them to bring him in.

I don't like extremists. Its just as annoying to read Clausen should be starting ASAP as it is to read some ignorance stating he will be nothing more than a third, and likely will never be more than a backup.

Only way we don't keep Moore (assuming he plays well this year and he most likely will) is if we have salary cap issues trying to keep Williams and any other big name player.

If Moore plays well this season than I think it might be in the best interest of the team to try and move Clausen, if Cantwell continues to prove worthy of remaining on a roster.

Add depth to another position. On Moore though, you need to watch out for David Garrard syndrome. Teams were so obsessed with stopping our run when Garrard became a starter that he blew up stat-wise for us. 18 Touchdown to 3 Interception season. Then teams started respecting his arm, and our coaches wanted him to pass more because of his success and he just sucked it up once teams had to gameplan for him.

You would hope the coaches here remain faithful to a heavy dose of running game and just allow Moore to manage the game and not ask him to carry the load but you never know.

Garrard took that one good season to the bank and the Jaguars have regretted it ever since.

If only an arm is all it took.....Jeff George would have been King, not Joe Montana.

But, as usual, Zod is correct.

I imagine something similar was said about Moore after the Jake postseason interception-fest meltdown.

It is much more likely for Moore to never start than for him to be a career QB.

Except Clausen was drafted much higher and has more upside than Moore. How many second round quarterbacks never get a single chance at starting?

No QBs were drafted in the 2nd round of 2005 draft.

2 QBs were drafted in the 2nd round of the 2006 draft.

Kellen Clemens has 9 career starts.

Tarvaris Jackson has 19 career starts, and likely a bit more this season if Favre retires.

In 2007, 3 QBs were drafted in the 2nd round.

Kevin Kolb is the Eagles started this season, and has 2 starts under his belt already.

Drew Stanton has a start for the Lions.

John Beck has 4 starts for the Dolphins.

In 2008 just 2 QBs were drafted in the 2nd round.

Brian Brohm has 1 start for the Bills.

Chad Henne had 13 starts for the Dolphins and is their starter this season.

in 2009 only 1 QB was drafted in the 2nd round.

Pat White is not a typical NFL QB but the Dolphins took a shot on him, and while he hasn't started a single game he got to participate in 13 of them running the Wildcat.

0 2nd rounders in 2004.

0 2nd rounders in 2003.

0 2nd rounders in 2002.

3 in 2001.

Drew Brees - Nothing need be said.

Quincy Carter had over 30 starts.

Marques Tuiasosopo had 2 starts.

0 were drafted in the 2nd round of 2000.

So over the past 10 years, 11 QBs have been drafted in the second round not including the 2010 draft, and 10 of them have started at least a game in the NFL.

Chances for Clausen getting a shot at starting has a historically high shot at happening at some point in time. Stats do not lie.

There seems to be some hostility towards Clausen here :D. To say that he will be a career backup is as silly as saying he will start tomorrow. We don't know anything yet, but i feel he could be a starting qb for a long time. And im sure alot of people with much more football knowledge and savvy think that clausen could become a very good starting qb in the NFL as well. I agree he may not start at all this year...but hating on the man when no one has a clue how he will turn out is asinine. fwiw.

If Clausen starts any games this year, one of 2 things happened. We either locked up the division early and are playing the backups (highly unlikely) or we are in a world of hurt, Moore is injured or totally ineffective and Cantwell isn't playing well either. In any event if Clausen is playing we are likely on a losing streak and out of the playoffs.

The best thing for any Panther fan is for Moore to do well and for Clausen to hold the clipboard all year. Anyone who can't see that and only wants Clausen to play are fans of a player not fans of the Panthers.

The Charlotte media is openly rooting for Jimmy Clausen to fail. I don't know whether this is an anti-Notre Dame thing or what, but I'm sick of it. If Jimmy Clausen can play he should be the opening day starter. I don't care how nice a guy Matt Moore is.

What,if i may ask,is giving you this kind of idea.Every time i read the newspaper,or listen to radio/tv, there are positive things written or said.

Am i missing something?

So Garrad should have played bad?? What exactly are you implying? That Moore should play bad this year so he doesn't have a huge drop off? Its better to not have the great year now so that there isn't the huge disappointment in the following year? No one is thinking about next year. I want to win a SB this year and the only way to do that is to make the playoffs with a solid run game and supplemental passing along with a stout defense. Any thing that comes after that is for another day to worry over.

    • The point is there is a difference between analyst saying he is the consensus no.1 and scouts/GMs saying it. If you are saying the substance is a bunch of talking heads on ESPN saying then that doesnt mean anything. There was literally numerous sources saying we were taking Stroud around the combine and mock draft creators, even Vegas had him as the favorite for a while. It changed later on, what part of that screams consensus? We know why it changed...the substance is irrelevant. Bryce supporters constantly bringing this up while he has shown nothing so far outside of heading to bust territory just comes off like giant Cope. Bryce had multiple red flags, there is no way all the teams had him as the best QB. He didnt even give any other teams the time of day outside of panthers and texans which makes it even more unclear they would all have him number 1.  Thats not your substance to support he was consensus no. 1. Period.
