P-55 Fan Fest analysis

Where to start. Gantt knows quite a bit, based on hanging out with the players and coaches every practice. Does he know all the Xs and Os, no that is obvious, but he doesn't try to be an expert breaking down the offense and defense. He reports of who looked good, who didn't, who got hurt and how serious, etc. He knows what they are planning and what they are thinking to the extent that they share with any reporter. He is not a football expert but who said he was. But for example when he said that Cantwell looked the best on Saturday, he was right and it obvious even to someone like me. I wouldn't count on Gantt for in-depth game analysis or strategy but for what he provides it is defintely given with an insider perspective and that is what he is good for.

And your analysis is quite flawed. Not based on what you present with is your own subjective opinion using very selective plays but to assume that what you reported was that objective or definitive. There weren't enough stats to make any objective reports and yet you argue using a play or drill as if it was that significant while admitting all along that no one should put anything into this scrimmage.

First of all you say the scrimmage isn't a big deal but you go on and on for paragraphs nitpicking and arguing every point he or I made. If it isn't a big deal then why are you dissecting every issue unless you like to argue or think that you must be doing it to win some pissing contest since the scrimmage obviously isn't by your own admission.

Didn't see how your points were new or enlightening, just a rehash of the same thing you already said in half the number of words, pages ago.

And you finish saying it isn't worth arguing about, after arguing for paragraphs. Now you will likely go on for pages breaking each sentence of paragraph into another diatribe.

We do agree about one thing. It isn't worth arguing and when Cantwell plays before Clausen I won't be nearly as surprised as you will be apparently. Lets let it go at that. I don't mind being right one more time.

Well, I'll agree that I rehashed pretty much what I had said earlier, which is why I said it wasn't worth arguing. But after the time it took to write my rebuttal, I wasn't about to delete it, so went with it...ah, sue me ;). I will say that everything I stated was based on my own observations of what I saw, and assumed that was clear to anyone reading. I didn't extrapolate anything beyond the limited plays that I saw, and tried to report as objectively as possible. You were stating things as fact that in reality are nothing but your own opinion, then tried to use Gantt to support the fact you are right. Just because you said it's so doesn't make it correct...no matter how much you may think so.

The bottom line is that you and I disagree on this. No big deal. You call my analysis flawed, and I return the favor. Either way it's still early, and things will work themselves out regardless of what you or I say.

By the way, nice dig on the diatribe, but you shouldn't go calling the kettle black.

    • Serious question:  Why LG and not RG?  There may be something I do not know, but Hunt's contract is huge and he could be let go after this season (post june 1 cut) and it would save the Panthers a ton of money.  Extending him would be paying a G who is in his mid 30s guaranteed money (and I do not see that as a terrible thing).  So if we release him at age 31, we save $19m.  I like him, but at 31, will he be worth the mega contract?   LG Damien Lewis has actually outperformed Hunt and he is a year younger.  He would also save less vs. the cap and leave less in the dead cap pool.  While his current contract expires after the 2027 season, he is a better prospect (IMO) to extend because only 50% of his current contract was guaranteed.  Here are his contract numbers.   Now, getting to Ickey--he could want LT money if he is offered a second contract.  If we pay him LT money to play either G positions, we are likely overpaying.  Secondly, the injury he suffered could be one that limits his productivity.  Ickey was improving, but he was an average LT.  The only way I re-sign Ickey is to have him accept a G contract and make a lot of it incentive based.     I feel like I am missing something, but in my mind, Ickey was always a guard if you consider the fact that he is an average OT and would be a great G.  Is that still the case (injury)?
    • Supplemental draft uses picks from next year. So a team were to draft him in the 1st, their upcoming 1st next draft would no longer be available. There have been some notable players that were obtained in the supplemental draft, such as Kosar. It doesn't necessarily happen every year either, and is more on a as needed basis. The gambling trouble is a big red flag for teams, and maybe pushes him down to a 4th? Not sure a team would use a 1st on him.
    • If hypothetically, Ickey comes fully healthy, would he be willing to give up left tackle money for left guard money? In the Panthers case, moving Ickey LG or RT would be in our best interest and as it gives us our best starting offensive lineman combination. However, Im sure there's another team that would be desperate and willing to dish out top dollars for Ickey to have him come play left tackle for them. In that case, Ickey would just leave for that team instead.
