Too soon to look at free agents?

We should definitely take a look at Karlos Dansby

Why would we take a look at a LB? I think two guys that would look good in Panthers uniforms would be Dunta Robinson (who might be affordable due to his injury history) and Rocky Bernard. Shaun Cody would be an interesting option as would Tank Johnson but I'm pretty sure the FO wouldn't take a look at him because of his past. Another quick suggestion, what does everyone think of maybe bringing in Chris Simms to compete with Delhomme in training camp. I'm sure that will be McCown's job for the taking though.

I hope we don't burst the bank on any one player (aside from Peppers if he wants to stay). I would much rather echo what other people have said.

*High character - as in really determined personalities but also mature so they don't go to strip clubs...

*Possible misused at previous team - Case example Brayton

*High Motor

*Something to prove

The way I see it, talent is a mis-used term. The vast majority of players actually are pretty close in how effective they are, but the 'bad' players are either in the wrong scheme or have bad work ethic. Give me a player who has a non stop motor and feels like he has been slighted by being cast out his old team and ask him to do ONLY what he does best. That player will thrive. Look at Daimone Lewis last season. He thrived when he was a situational pass rusher and then performed at a lower level once asked to be an every down DL.

The contrast is the player who has a great work ethic and motor, but also had the perfect scheme for them. They are the players that get paid the huge money, but often get brought into schemes they do not naturally fit. One exampe of that is Mike Wahle. The reason he was widely sought after was his ability to pull. I could probably count on one hand the amount of times we used him in that fashion and inevitably we probably would have gotten a better performance from someone with a worse track record, but was a perfect fit for a power running game. Basically just because a player has a great resume, it is unlikely they will continue their success elsewhere as no teams have exactly the same scheme.

Big price free agents also upset team chemistry. Imagine how Beason and Davis would feel if we brought in Dansby on a much bigger pay scale? Those two are supposed to be our leaders of our D and are the driving force behind many of our decent defensive performances. It is human nature to feel slighted when people are brought in based off another teams success.

No, I would much rather a free agency of Brayton and Vincent type signings. We can bring a ton of them in for camp and let the ones that fit our scheme rise to the top.

I really don't care what this team does in Free Agency. Sure, they've signed a couple big money guys that didn't really work out. But, you can't say they haven't hit their fair share of low priced gems as well.

If there's one thing I really trust about our front office, it's signing the right guys in Free Agency. Nowadays, it's rare that there's a big money free agent that's going to come in and earn his check. Our FO has really learned how to use free agency, and I like a lot of what they do in that dept.

To be honest, I don't really have a problem with the personnel on the field...

Aside from not being able to draft solid WR's that is.

Well, is their a free agent pick up that can replace the turbovac? In all seriousness, what about romeo crennel? Wasn't the guy a "defensive genius" in NE for a while or something like that?

Romeo Crennel would be a good hire. The only problem with that is that he is a 3-4 guy. I personally like the 3-4 over the 4-3 but doing a switch would require personel changes on the D-line.

I think with the lack of a first round pick we need to be looking heavily into free agency. With DT and DB as priorities. Also I personally think that we need to use our second round pick on a QB to groom behind Delhomme.

We'll be lucky if we can get one starting DT or one starting CB out of free agency that doesn't suck total monkey balls without breaking the bank.

I'd like to see some guys brought in from FA to fill the depth chart with cheap experience, and use the draft to start re-establishing the defensive front and backfield.

In a perfectly ideal world, I'd like a veteran corner that can play #2 alongside Gamble. Lucas is most likely gone. Marshall, despite popular belief, is not ready to play every down. Corner usually takes some time to learn. I dont want a rookie in there, unless we get a really good guy to fall to us.

The draft would be the perfect place to start re-enforcing our defensive line. Especially on the interior, it's probably one of the best places to have a rookie starting...if you're going to be in that situation.

I'm sorry but I don't see Matt Moore as a starting QB in this league.

Even if you don't, you've got to admit there's next to no reason for not having him around as a 3rd guy. He's super young, and he's got potential. He may be a decent starter in a couple years. He may be a great starter in a few years. The fact of the matter is, that we just don't know. The one thing we do know? He's dirt cheap to keep around, and he could pay off. If he doesn't, it's really not a big deal.

Really? who the hell would you suggest drafting in the 2nd or 3rd round this year that would be better????? whoever you say I am going to laugh at.

Judging by your name you would be biased agaist anybody other than Moore. It's hard to tell who would be available when we pick in the 2nd round. I'm just saying I don't see Moore as a long term solution.

    • This was a good breakdown from Daniels.  Last year has had a lasting impact on Young. He still isn't getting the time needed from the OL - the OL we have is made to establish the run and for the run to be in play.  We get behind and have to throw all game we are doomed with this O-line. His receivers have to catch the ball when he makes a good throw to them, he can't have them dropping his good passes. Why are we running 4 slants all toward the same direction?  Why a triple option on 4th and 1? That's on the coaches. Bryce gets hurried and starts slinging the ball where it shouldn't be thrown, more study and recognition from him are needed.  Bryce doesn't step up in the pocket and throws too soon and unbalanced.  He over and under throws the ball because of it.  That's on him.  If the pocket isn't there and he can't get his base set he needs to check down or "live to fight another day." He has been thrown to the wolves and has lost his confidence.  This team doesn't have much, if any, talent and it's a cluster.  I think he can still be an NFL QB.  Maybe not a QB1 in the short term, but if he has a chance with better coaching and personnel he may be better than we are giving him credit for. I think we ruined him last year and have not fixed anything to help him this year.  If we can't run or get way behind all NFL defenses are coming after him.  Dalton has more respect and defenses didn't always sell out to get to him because he'd hit a quick slant, screen, or check down because he has the experience to know what's coming and what to do. Just my 2 cents.
    • All depends on who the backup is. Josh Allen probably would have been benched too if there were better backups than Matt Barkley and Nate peterman.
    • Where did I once say we should draft him because he's a projected Top 5 pick?   That's one of my many problems with you, your reading comprehension skills are very poor (and/or you just don't care to use your brain, one of the two).  I solely used that to point out that me pushing T-Mac isn't some absurd homerism, that at least I'm pushing someone who is deserving of a Top 5 draft pick. And despite me explaining it to you numerous times, you still seem to not grasp how QB's get placed in mock drafts vs draft grades.  They are treated entirely different in mock drafts to any other position, because of how teams generally treat them in the draft because of how important the position is. Literally any other position except QB, mock drafts generally follow draft grades with some team needs factored in.  But with QB's, draft grades are generally disregarded and they ALWAYS put a few QB's at the very top of the draft, because that's just usually what happens.  The exact same thing happened in 2022 with guys like Pickett and Willis widely being Top 10 picks in mock drafts, only for Pickett to fall to what, around 20?, and Willis going in the 2nd round (and even being the 3rd QB if I remember correctly too). The overwhelming majority of draft experts are saying there isn't a high first round grade on these QB's, but they still get mocked there because they're trying to predict how the draft will actually go. That's been my point the entire time, reaching for a QB in a bad QB draft when you have a roster as depleted of talent as ours, does not tend to work out well. And I've never said I'm not open to other players, I've very explicitly said that if a QB or DE stands out come draft time, I'm open to that discussion.  That I'd be open to Hunter as a CB but I prefer a WR over a CB at the top of the draft.  But we're also not talking about the 15th pick here where there could realistically be all sorts of possible picks to discuss.  With the first pick, there really would only be a small handful of options, T-Mac is head and shoulders above any other given our current roster and state of the franchise in general.
