UNC Charlotte football is official in 2013

They will be in the Southern Conf or a hybrid of Big South/Southern by the second year of football.

SoCon told them hell no because we don't want to join for all sports. The CAA commissioner has mentioned us as a potential candidate a few times. They are the best FCS conference, they have by far the best FCS television contract, and have schools with similar qualities of Charlotte. The SoCon is mostly filled with small private institutions.

The Big South is a possibility, but I think Charlotte would go independent before they go Big South.

I apologize about the negativity but some times being realistic comes across that way.

NC is suppose to be a basketball state and UNCC has a hard time selling tickets to a basketball game. Heck the Tar Heels drew no more than 10k people when in Charlotte a few years back and this town is full of UNC bandwagon fans.

All that being said, it doesn't bother me that they have a football team. I may even go to a few games.

Basketball and football are two completely different beasts. Charlotte's main problem for basketball is nobody here cares about the conference they play in anymore. Sellouts were a regular when Charlotte was in CUSA playing great competition and making the tournament every year. The A10 has a few draws like Xavier, Temple, Dayton (kind of), and whoever is the surprise ranked team in the A10 every year. Overwhelmingly though, who wants to see LaSalle, Fordham, Duquesne, and St. Bonaventure. The rest of the league is at least respectable and relatively well know, but those 4 are an embarrassment.

This would probably excite me if I still went to uncc...good thing for me I decided to switch schools and go Virginia Tech instead....elite football program and college football atmosphere.

If you are talking football, there is no A10 football conference so you are correct, it is very difficult to recruit top talent to a league that doesn't exist.

If you are talking basketball, Xavier and Dayton both have no problems drawing in top 100 (and even top 50 on occasion) talent.

The A10 gets more top 150 players in basketball than any non-BCS conference. It's hard to get 'top' talent, but I wouldn't go as far as to say incredibly difficult.

I realize this. Trust me. Xavier is also a better basketball program.

All I'm saying, and it's hard to dispute, is that using the A-10 as a selling point the way you could use the ACC or SEC is difficult.

Why does App sell out their stadium? If you field a good product, it doesn't matter who you play.

I went to USF and graduated the year before they got football back in 97. In 12 years they have come a long way and are a respectable team now sending players to the NFL regularly. It took 12 years for the second largest school in Florida to get decent. Charlotte has little hope of being even mediocre in the next 30 years.

As for App they don't have a lot of other activities to compete with and their students are typically not from there, they live on or near campus and they don't have a ton of other activities to choose from.

You bring up a good point.

Anyone who has gone or goes to Charlotte knows that the place empties on the weekends and most of the students are commuters anyways.

Thought I guess you could make the argument that bringing football to the university would entice students to stay on campus, but I guess the jury is still out on that one.
