Overall fan interest down?

With a 6 month old and a stay at home mom I'll be lucky to make a tailgate, let alone TC.

Not only that but I have 0 vacay time due to 2 weddings and my sons birth.

It sure would be nice to go though.

Congratulations on your son!

We're having a son ourselves. November 22nd.

Will be a busy holiday season for me.

It probably has to do with a few things:

1. Its been HOT as hell this summer, and spartanburg is worse than about anywhere else locally. people just cant take the heat.

2. Smitty is out of camp due to the broken arm

3. Fan favorites like: Moose, Jake, Peppers, Harris, Hoover are all gone.

4. The media's perception to the casual fan, that this is a "rebuilding" year, and thus we have no "superstars" to come see.

5. A few high profile guys like Stewart & Otah on PUP list, couldnt help things either.

I think all these factors in conjunction with the overall low expectations for the season have led to reduced intrest in camp this year.

People may also actually be able to afford family vacations this year, unlike the last few years and could have used all their vacation days on trips this summer instead. So the economy being a little better could have a reverse effect on camp turnout if you ask me.

The economy? Practice is free and you can bring anything you want into the place, i.e. food/beverages. No beer though I don't think.

It's less than a 2-hour drive from Charlotte people. Unless you're unemployed, using the economy as an excuse is absurd.

Anyway, as for the topic, I think the vets being cut loose have a lot to do with it. The fans in attendance fall into two camps: the hardcores and the families. The hardcores will be there regardless, but a lot of the families brought their kids in the past to go see their heroes like Jake and Peppers neither which are on the team anymore. It was interesting that there weren't as many Panthers player jerseys out in the crowd on Saturday because I'm sure most people had a Peppers or Delhomme jersey that they didn't want to wear. I only own a Peppers and Sam Mills jersey myself so *my* options were down to 1.

I really do encourage people to attend if they're thinking about it. It's less corporate than a game is (pull out those VIC cards people!!), absolutely free, you get autographs/briefly say hi to players, no drunken jackasses to deal with either...it's a lot of fun.

Hot weather + too many young players people don't know + fed up with losing + not in Charlotte or Raleigh = less people at camp. For me, I just couldn't care less about seeing practice and I'm sure others feel the same way. I've been to every home game the past five years and will continue to do so, but I just have ZERO interest in watching practice. Mayyyyybe if it were in Charlotte I'd go. But drive to hicksville? I'll pass.

If you can't afford free, then how are you able to afford the money to pay for Internet service?

Seriously, people can't go to training camp because it's too expensive? It's free. What do you want them to do, reimburse your gas mileage?

this is probably the better answer over the others in the thread.

as for myself...i was planning on going the first part of this week but i got sick over the weekend. hopefully i'll be able to go the second half of the week. i just wasn't able to work it out last week

btw...it's a three hour drive for me. i used to live around there but now i have to find excuses to go down there and i'm running out of them.

It's the best chance of getting a really up-close and personal view of the players, etc. .... but whatever.
