Tyler Brayton....

Zod put it well last year. He said Brayton was 1 step away from being a pro bowl player at DE. He led the D line in tackles and was second in quarterback pressures with 24 and 7 quarterback hits. Not bad for as little as we pay him.

He also had more sacks last year than anyone on the team last year not named Julius Peppers with a whopping 5.

Sure he is no Julius but who do you intend to start over him?

Here is your post: Um yea I just pulled up the career stats on Brayton and because of that I don't think he is really good. I didn't bother to research his game, nor did I decide to look into his situation at Oakland; I just looked at some stats and decided to base my entire opinion of em. I'm not going to offer up who deserves to start above him and why but yea guys, he sounds like a scrub....

Thanks for the opinion.

Seriously though why are we keeping him? Cause he is cheap :)

Brayton was misused constantly in Oakland. Move on from that already.

As far as him not meeting the youth movement/no big deals. Brayton turned down the offer that was on the table, to go into free agency, to see what other teams thought he was worth. He visited several teams, then ended up coming back here and signing here.

His contract isn't big.

As far as the type of DE he is, I'd consider him an all around DE. Much like Rucker was for us. He plays the run the best, but he also does a good job getting into the backfield, and creating pressure. He isn't the pass rusher that Peppers is, but he's still an every down player. In fact, in passing downs, they move him inside to DT to use his strength and speed to collapse the pocket on the inside.

I would like to think that our younger guys will eventually take the starting role from him, but until then, he's going to do well for us.

Radical thought: It seems that there are signs we are going to get a bit untraditional this year on defense. Norwood, for instance, will move around. In the past two drafts we landed pass rushers, and there seems to be a lack of emphasis at DT. Does that mean our DTs will be out on passing downs, and we could, theoretically, have three DEs in the game and Norwood at SLB. Remember, they said they would replace Peppers by committee. We would need only 1 or no DT 30%-40% of the game.

I am assuming you are directing all of this toward the other poster although you quoted me. Otherwise you are just reinterating what I have already said in this thread about Brayton. Brayton is a very good player in our scheme who works hard for little money relative to his value. I was very glad we signed him back this year.

He was directing it at the OP who seems like he deserves it.

The OP shows how little he knows, and it seemed to be a "hey I don't think this player is good but I'm going to make it seem as if I'm asking a question to see if I can get others to support me!" kind of thread, which is why I was an asshole in my first post.

Actually, I believe this group of DT's will help the pass rush. I don't care how "unknown" he is, Louis Leonard is much much more athletic and a better pass rusher than Kemo ever was or ever will be, and Corvey Irvin is another very athletic big man (bigger than Lewis) who has the potential to get pressure up the middle, where it really counts. Ed Johnson is also drawing praise from Baker for being quicker than he thought he would be.

Having said that, Brayton and CJ have both played inside before, so I wouldn't be a bit surprised to see either one of them do it again this year.

That. I quoted Panther 55 because I thought it was good.

I'm just really tired of having to find actuall camp news through a sea of:

I think the Panthers will be good cause blah blah blah my opinion matters blah blah blah, I didn't do any research or watch a lot of football but yada yada blah.

Read Carefully! Brayton is an OK player like You stated he left in Free Agency and didn't get offers from other teams i wonder why?? 16 sacks and 4 forced fumbles in 8 yrs id much rather see the younger guys on the field that have upside Brayton hit his peak 4 years ago... Don't be mad at me because i have facts to back up my argument. The comments about him being a step away from the Pro Bowl cmon man if he was that good he would have interest from other teams.... Im glad he has some veteran leadership but he can teach from the bench for all i care im looking for production on the field in sacks and ffs from DE position...

You keep harping on the 16 sacks in 8yrs, but I have already pointed out to you that 9 1/2 of those sacks have come in the two years that Brayton has been a Panther. He has also had about 95 tackles in that time. Not only that, but he has just barely missed out on a few more sacks simply because Peppers was a step quicker and got there first. He's doing just fine here.

    • yeah. winter backpacking trips were the most miserable and amazing experiences. same with the coldest and snowiest hunting  experiences. i love being in it. makes for incredible memories. the worse it was, the more i ended up loving it. made the greatest memories.  i just want to get out of it afterwards.
    • I forgot about Jackson...definitely elite.  The sad part of your list is that 2 of them were 'there for the taking for the Panthers'.  Rumor has it that Hurney loved Herbert and was vetoed on trying to trade up.  And rumor has it that Frank & McCown wanted Stroud.  I believe both rumors.
    • I went on a solo elk hunt in the Flat Tops. It was awesomely miserable. LOL It was a late season hunt, I think third season and it was forecasted to snap off cold with highs in the upper thirties and lows in the single digits. fug it, I'm going anyway. They were wrong. The highs were in the low 20s and the lows were in the negative teens. I shivered so hard the first night I thought my teeth were going to break. It was the only time I've ever been legit concerned that I might be in trouble. Crawled out of my sleeping bag and got a fire started and suffered through the night bundled up next to the fire. I slept the next two nights literally wearing every stitch of clothing I'd brought with Nalgenes full of near boiling water in the bottom of my sleeping bag. That was the only way to have non-frozen water in the morning anyway. There was about a foot of snow on the ground and the melt/freeze crust was almost enough to support your weight but you'd go crashing through just as you went or make your step. It was exhausting travel and every step sounded like a rifle shot. Hunting was basically impossible. I never saw an elk in those four days, only saw 5-6 deer. LOL It was brutal but I loved it. Absolutely beautiful country that is never been to before and haven't been back since. I needed that four day complete break from society fighting for my life against the elements. I'm weird like that.
