Let's not forget this secondary is going up against rookie WRs and unproven WRs only. I think it could be very easy for them to look much better than they legitimately are. Steve Smith not being on the field is a bigger factor than I think we are admitting to ourselves.

Maybe the secondary is great.....or maybe there is no one to test how good they really are.

Well, they were the 4th ranked pass defense in the league last year, and the only difference is that Chris Harris is gone. IMO, he was the weak link in the secondary last year anyway, at least as a pass defender.

With two good coverage safeties (before anyone hee haws, the light came on for Godfrey at the end of last year) and three good CB's (Cpt will be seen as highway robbery at the end of it all I think), I'm apt to believe the secondary will be much better than average.

I dunno man, I think CRA is right. Everything may look stronger on the D with a younger O out there.

EDIT: oh yeah and I would think the defense as a whole impacts the passing game. Saying that we only lost Harris sounded off.

I think we are gonna see some high motors out of our Dline this year as well. Sacks should ensue. The only thing I am wondering about is our DTs. Are they as high motor as our DE will be.

can someone tell me why we wasted a pick on Pike? Cantwell had the hype before Pike did anything in practice. So why draft him if A) they already had confidence in him knew Pike wasn't NFL ready? It just bites my ass. This was the deepest draft class in years and RJ Stanford may not make it because his draft analysis wasn't good and we may keep Witherspoon instead and now Pike is looking destined for the PS. Draft 10 and 8 make it. People are even thinking Gettis will get cut. That'll make it 7! Usually Fox keeps all of his picks. If he cuts any of them, its no more than 1. I cant even remember last time they cut 2 much less 3 picks in the same year. In fact, I dont think they ever have! With this being a very deep draft, thats pretty pathetic. We should have at least 9 rookie picks coming in. :rant:

that still doesn't change the fact they are defending against all rookie WRs and 2 unproven WRs who were unimpressive thus far in the NFL. They should look very good considering who they are covering......

Godfrey was the weaker link overall last season (and the season before) out of the 2 starting S's (in terms of coverage) He may have forced some fumbles the last 3 games but overall he was still the weak link unless we only want to talk about a 3-4 game window.

I am just saying it is too early to think the secondary will be great. Carolina has a pretty weak WR group attacking them. They are overall a pretty weak group w/ Steve Smith. Steve ain't playing. The secondary should be shutting those guys down....

also, last season there pass ranking was inflated b/c they were so bad against the run at times. They were pretty good last year but with the way Marshall played the #2 spot and Godfrey played they weren't as good as the stats showed.

i hate it when ppl use the "inflated stats" excuse to prove a point. Look, they did it. they were ranked fourth. use all the circumstances you want, but that doesn't change it. and until proven otherwise, they are still the 4th ranked pass defense, minus 1 man (Harris) who was replaced rather nicely.

it is just reality. I don't care what they are ranked. The weak ground D and Jake played into the numbers early. Godfrey still hasn't proven he can cover and be where he is suppose to be in regards to coverage and Marshall imo still hasn't proven he is a legit #2 corner and not just a good nickel guy.

a secondary shutting down rookies in training camp isn't proof yet they can hold up w/ what shoud likely be an overal weaker pass rush than last year.

I really am glad I am not one of those pathetically sad individuals who cannot except the receipt of any positive news without immediately building a case to disprove the validity of said news.

This is bull poo. Our pass defense was top notch last year. All other factors aside, it was clear to everyone who paid attention that we were a tough team to pass against. Marshall is absolutely a legit #2 corner, and Gamble/Marshall is considered to be a very solid CB tandem around the league. And the Godfrey-hating is just ridiculous at this point. He started all but three games on one of the best pass defenses in the NFL and played lights out towards the end of the season.

you are right, I am pathetically sad individual b/c I refuse to take every tweet from 6 days of TC and starting preaching that each tweet holds the reality of what this team is and what every player is.

Sorry dude, the secondary holding up w/ what projects to be a weak run D and weak pass rush is a legit concern. Sorry if a couple of tweets doesn't have me drinking homer Kool-aid and bashing those who aren't drinking as pathetically sad. I guess that would make me a "good" fan. Reality is our projected starters on D are shutting down WRs that overall are probably 2nd string level.

So yeah, I think it is too early to think questions are answered. I think it is pretty lame that on the huddle you get bashed if you don't want to get behind and praise the tweets of the opinions of a few dudes.
