thanks for clarifying.. I misread it and have been scratching my head since doing so:cheers2:

I was... he's already proven that he can run a progression. The problem is whether or not he is seeing openings downfield or they really just don't exist.

I distinctly remember in Clausen's scouting reports they made a note that he checked down a lot.

You would have too if you were playing with that crap Oline and one WR. I have been critical of Clausen but I understand why he is use to doing it. Just something our QB coach needs to work with him on. I dont expect him to be elite right off the bat and no one else should ether.

Unless you've missed it, the Patriots won three Super Bowls with a QB who checked down more than half the time. Long passes by Brady were more often yards credited to him after the catch.

And the ability to check down is something that Jake was never really good at. If the planned route to Smitty got double covered, we were either getting an incomplete pass, a sack, or (esp last year) an interception.

I'd trade one 30 yard pass and a bunch of rushing yards in two series for 12x 7 yard passes any day.

P.S. Did you know NFL rules changes over the past 2 years favor the passing game?

Good point, the Weis/Davidson offense favors a very controlled passing game where a check down is not necessarily a bad thing.

In my original observations, I didn't mean to knock Clausen by calling him the king of the checkdown, I just noticed that most of the passes he threw ended up being a checkdown and this was in stark contrast to Moore who seems more likely to push the ball downfield and take more risks.

I watched several ND games this year, and Clausen threw downfield plenty. I think this check down stuff is being a bit overblown, probably based on the camp reports that he has done a lot of it here thus far.

From what I saw this season, Clausen thrives on the short to intermediate game, but will occasionally throw it deep. However, the truth is that it's the short and mid-range game that keeps the chains moving and drives alive. It also gives the team more 3rd and shorts, which greatly compliments our run oriented offense. So the fact that he was so successful at it bodes well for his and the team's future.

there is no need for taking excessive risks. we have the best running-game in the league. all we need is for our QB to rely on the run-game, and then not make mistakes when it is time to change the pace. i would rather have an 8 yard completion to rosario, then for our QB to force the ball 40 yards downfeild to smitty in double coverage.

Agreed, but at some point you do have to stretch the field.

after thinking about this more i am really glad to hear clausen is checking down and think the coaches are too. it means he is able to read his progressions and is as some have said inspiring confidence that he is not another gunslingling rookie qb. looking at how many rookie qb's end up with more picks than tds, it's pretty refreshing.

this said, there were some good tweets today about him striking moore down the sideline for a TD. sounds like he is opening it up a bit.
