CatMan's 8/1 camp observations...

LOL, I wouldn't call him David Carr 2.0 just yet. I watched David Carr at camp a few years back and I was very concerned about him, he defined "happy feet" and Clausen doesn't even come close. It seemed like Carr would read the primary route on a play and then start rolling out of the pocket and looking for help if the primary guy wasn't open. It became very clear to me why Carr was sacked so many times in Houston, he didn't have the greatest line down there, but he also didn't help them out much.

David Carr is the poster boy for why you don't start a rookie QB on a bad team. He was left a broken man by that Houston O-line.

there is nothing wrong with check-downs. get the ball in steve smith hands, it doesnt matter where he catches it, he is a homerun threat everytime. i think that as soon as AE gets the hang of the NFL, he will be able to do the same thing. same goes for deangelo.

i would rather a checkdown than an interception

From what I've read from the Camp Reports, Dwill has looked really good catching the ball so far.

General question for the board: I'm thinking Clausen checking down might be because in the first few days of camp it was noted that he had a nice deep throw but couldn't his anything under ten yards. Now he's being worked to hit the short route because they've seen that he can hit the long shot. Whaddya think?

He is checking down because we have no reliable down field target running with the 2's and 3's. Honestly, we don't have a down field target running with the 1's either.

I take it you're a ND fan...

Thats beside the point, Clausen went over the top against every defense ND faced if the coverage allowed it. Checking down, was actually a problem for Clausen until his JR year because he tried to go for the big play. I think hes checking it down to play it safe so he doesnt get demoted. To me, it sounded like you were implying he doesnt have the talent, which is why you got the eye roll.

- Clausen is becoming the king of the check-down. In just about every 11 on 11 drill I saw he ended up going through his progression and dumping it off to a guy on a short route. Seems as though he's being very conservative. Clausen was knocked down on one play when Charles Johnson (who was participating fully today) shoved an offensive lineman into him (not sure who the offensive lineman was?).

Not surprising. I've watched a good number of ND videos since we drafted him. He's a scrambler from what I can tell. Has good pocket presence too. I'm really curious how he'll perform in the Pros. If he steps his game up to NFL level, he COULD be the QB we've been waiting for.

Then again, he could be a pansy that rides out a big contract and amounts to nothing.

What sucks is if we have a lock-out next year, it could throw off his future with us.
