CatMan's 8/1 camp observations...

He hasn't been dropping allot of catches, but the punts he's dropped have been pretty noticeable because they've hit him right in the hands.

There truly is an art to catching a KR or PR ball. Both are diffrent also. Some people can do it and some cant. Still even if Edwards dose not work out at PR I think he will be a damn good WR.

Yeah I think he will get the hang of catching punts. I'd say to be catching the majority of them now is good considering how new he is to it.

- Clausen is becoming the king of the check-down. In just about every 11 on 11 drill I saw he ended up going through his progression and dumping it off to a guy on a short route. Seems as though he's being very conservative. Clausen was knocked down on one play when Charles Johnson (who was participating fully today) shoved an offensive lineman into him (not sure who the offensive lineman was?).

david carr, anyone?

Good info, thanks Catman... One interesting question I had when we picked up Witherspoon was this - I thought he'd instantly be the best option we had as a returner, he has tons of speed. BUT, do we keep him strictly as a returner if he isn't good enough to contribute at DB as well? Or do we keep a guy back there who can play as both a returner and a positional player even though they may not be as good at returning as Witherspoon?

Or like he did against real defenses Notre Dame played' date=' he is tentative to pull the trigger on the long ball resulting in a ton of check downs....[/quote']

if edwards lives up to his potential, he'll be devastating from the slot catching check down passes ala wes welker. LB's will never catch him and safetys will have their backs to him as they are chasing steve smith deep. a high percentage pass with a long run is better than a low percentage deep ball.

on paper, and based solely on potential, our offense is "saints" scary. actually, maybe better. we just have to rise up to it. if we do, we're going to be a fireworks show for the next 5 or 6 years. i hope we draft DL heavy the next couple of years.

I dont think we can afford to keep someone just as a return specialist with the questions of how many rb's and qb's we are going to keep. But then again I have no clue how good of a cornerback he is.

LOL, I wouldn't call him David Carr 2.0 just yet. I watched David Carr at camp a few years back and I was very concerned about him, he defined "happy feet" and Clausen doesn't even come close. It seemed like Carr would read the primary route on a play and then start rolling out of the pocket and looking for help if the primary guy wasn't open. It became very clear to me why Carr was sacked so many times in Houston, he didn't have the greatest line down there, but he also didn't help them out much.

Yeah I definately miss the D-line we had a few years back

punts aren't easy. i caught a few in high school and it's not as easy as it seems. it's not like catching a pass. also, there are guys running at you full speed wanting to knock your head off. we're just what, a couple of days into training camp? lets see how he does in preseason, he'll certainly get opportunities.

The dilemma is, the guy is a threat on KOs though, he could take it back anytime he touches it... But, from his history and this video I found, it appears he's not a very good CB. Here he is getting beat by TROY WILLIAMSON, lol...

Well, we kept Mark Jones around strictly for his return abilities. I'd rather see us keep Witherspoon around then see us send Armanti out there so he can get his bell rung and his confidence fractured in the process.
