Funniest camp moment ever

This was 02 or 03. Smitty got into it with a backup defensive back. Think his name was Cordell Taylor or something like that. The offense stands on one side of the field, the defense on the other. From the defensive side comes the unmistakable sound of Jarrod Cooper's voice....

"Hit him again, Cordell! Shut up, Steve, ya bitch!"

Players laughed. Media laughed. The Panthers PR guy comes running over to Stan Olsen from the Observer, telling him not to run that. It was awesome.

Either that or 06...Stanley McClover was doing his barking thing. Ken Lucas made a play on a goal line stand and he started to bark. Stanley came over and Lucas set up for a chest bump....McClover pancaked him. Even the offense was laughing.

In 2002 he battered teammate WR Guilian Gary and put him out of football.

"This is the third-such incident involving Smith. In 2002, he was involved in a fight with rookie wide receiver Guilian Gary, who left camp after the incident."

"In 2002, Gary was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Carolina Panthers of the National Football League (NFL).[14] He attended training camp, but left after being involved in a fight with fellow receiver Steve Smith, who has a history of physical altercations with teammates."

Another thing... I find ironic how there's some guys that I'm sure have talked sh*t to Smitty that he hasn't punched out. Coop seemed like a pretty big, bad ass guy.

I'm not saying Smitty is a punk, but I think he's targeted guys he thought were weaker. Bright seemed like an easy going guy, trying to make his dream happen and seemed very humble and modest from the interviews the media did with him when we had brought him back to camp that year. He also, from what I remember was a pretty skinny guy.

Lucas, although I can't remember where I read it/heard it, some said was a bit 'sweet' if you know what I mean... Although he was a pretty sturdy looking guy, if that was the case, to a lot of people he would be seen as soft. His open field tackling the season before that didn't help his case either. On top of that, Smitty punched him from behind - pretty dirty move.

I'm just saying... You don't see Smitty in trouble for socking Buckner, Kemo, or Peppers in the face.

Wow, I had knew about ending Bright's career and obviously the Lucas thing, but I never even heard of, or at least remember the Gary incident. The other two incidents were publicized instantly, but I don't recall anything in print when the incident with Gary happened. I wonder if he actually got into a fist fight with him?

That as badly written as Steve did not have a bad history before 2002, did he?

Smith never showed a great deal of interest in his classes in high school and didn't take the SAT. By the time he landed at Santa Monica College, he was just as raw mentally as he was physically.

"Not long after he got here, I had to go to him and say, 'You've had three or four fights here in the last three or four weeks,' " said Taylor, his junior-college coach. "I had to ask him 'What's wrong?' He said, 'I don't know.' I asked him if he was mad at anybody, and he said he didn't know. I asked him why he was fighting with other players and he said he didn't know that, either.

"During his two seasons at Utah, Smith was known to get into fights in practice, and that behavior was followed by several publicized incidents in the NFL."

But what kind of fights were they? You get into an argument or a scuffle with a guy versus breaking someones face... different story.

Either way, it doesn't really matter to me. He has did a lot of stupid poo and is lucky to still be playing.

    • First of all Sooners fan? Mods? Second if you think someone needs a specific reason to hate Texas you don’t watch real college football.
    • 100% even if rest of team is really talented if they march young out to be qb and he plays like he has for 90% of his starts the panthers have already lost doesnt even matter how good the rest of the team is or isnt and also makes it hard to even tell how good they are.  They need true competition for young this offseason.
    • It will be awesome to have an improved stadium to lose in I guess....   https://www.yahoo.com/news/panthers-file-rezoning-bank-america-111500840.html     The Carolina Panthers have taken another necessary step toward renovating their home of the present and future. Panthers Stadium, LLC, filed its rezoning site plan with the city of Charlotte on Monday, initiating an important — if mostly technical — step toward renovating Bank of America Stadium. The filings state that the rezoning relates “primarily to technical aspects associated with improvements to Bank of America Stadium,” and that the rezoning is required because “the current stadium zoning is out of date” for the team’s stadium renovation plans.   The planned stadium updates include new seats installed throughout the upper and lower bowls; stadium safety and security enhancements; a reimagined South Lawn Pavilion; upgraded restrooms; exterior enhancements (including LED video boards) and more. Planning for the stadium renovation project will continue through 2025, with construction starting in 2026 and the renovation’s conclusion in 2029, The Observer previously reported.
