So this was Jakes problem.

Jake's problems didn't start in 2009. They started in the 2005 championship game against Seattle. Before that, he was known as a clutch performer. After that, not so much. His last two playoff games for us were horrid, and Scherer wasn't around then.

This actually makes some sense. When you look at how he managed games, performed, and even statistically over the years, he peaked in 2005. period.

I'm not saying I don't like the guy (he was great for a little while) but we all fooled ourselves for far too long.

My question would be,if a new fundammental changes was the reason for Jake's flame out ,then why did his problems still persist after he was given the green light to go back to his old style,as attested to by the statements below?

"Finally, after consulting with McCown and others, Scherer told Delhomme about midway through the season to go back to his comfort zone".

It was too late. As I said, I went through something similar with my shooting form in basketball. I shot the same way my whole life, then my JUCO coach made this huge deal about it and I needed to change it - shoot more with my elbow in... Why? I shot like that my whole life, and I shot it WELL. So, the rest of the year I was worried about making the coach happy, yet my friends were saying, F him, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Everytime I stepped out on the court, I had both messages in my head - even if I knew the right answer, I couldn't get all the mixed messages out.

And as I said, I was told before, basketball is 90% mental, 10% athleticism. Athleticism doesn't hurt obviously, but if you don't got it upstairs, you won't last. I believe that principal applies to every sport, but especially football. If you don't have your mental game right and confidence, you may as well but a nice comfy recliner for yourself on the sidelines.

i will always find it amazing that some people still think make excuses for Jake Delhomme. hell even he didn't excuses for his play as some of you. its ridiculous.

I don't see it as excuses, I see it as recognizing it for what it was. I guess it depends on if you think it's a cop out... If so, you view it as an excuse. If you think it has some substance, you'll feel like, 'yeah, that's what happened, I can live with that.'

The ultimate judge will be his performance this season. If he's the old Jake, it won't look like excuses. If he's Jake circa 2009, it will.

i mean i dont think its impossible for scherer (or however u spell it) to have contributed to him taking a different approach to his game, but ultimately, that shouldn't have changed his play that dramatically. not to mention, Jake started getting worse during our 2008 games against Tampa and Oakland in particular. the only way to truly silence his doubters is to play well in cleveland, which is no tough task in the AFC North. and even then I can't place all the blame on Scherer

jesus christ how hard is it for some people to just say he fuging played bad, period.

drink the kool aid if you want cleveland, but when you're throwing batteries at him in october after his 3rd game in a row with more than 4 interceptions, don't say nobody warned you

I'm not one for excuses. His body was still capable of delivering the wins, it was his mind that was messed up. I don't think he ever got out of the playoff meltdown funk.

It was time for Jake to leave Carolina, but I wish him all the best in Cleveland and he could still surprise. He will receive a warm welcome if he ever plays a game in Carolina again.

FACT: Delhomme has never had a season where he's played over 3 games and threw less than double digit picks, Cleveland can have him. I'll take my chances with our new blood, Moore and Clausen.

Jake Delhomme

2003 - Games (16) TD/Int ( 19, 16 )

2004 - Games (16) TD/Int ( 29, 15 )

2005 - Games (16) TD/Int ( 24, 16 )

2006 - Games (13) TD/Int ( 17, 11 )

2007 - Games (3) TD/Int ( 8, 1 )

2008 - Games (16) TD, Int (15, 12 )

2009 - Games (11) TD/Int (8, 18 )

He even threw 5 picks in the 2 games he appeared in, in 1999, as a Saint.

Jake would never have taken us back to the SuperBowl, period. Moore and Clausen now have the opportunity to lead this talented young team, gel with them, develop some damn chemistry with them and make a f***ing impact in this friggin league. In my earnest opinion, realistically, if our D continues to solidify and develop over this coming season all we are lacking is a QB that can manage the game and not turn the ball over every other possession. If that happens then I really can see us transforming into the type of team that wins a damn SuperBowl!!! Hell we already have one of the best O-Lines in the NFC if not the entire NFL, in addition to a punch you in the f***ing mouth running game. Whatever the case, they've got to strike soon while the iron is hot, Smitty ain't gonna be around forever. That man deserves a damn ring.

Not that I am defending Jake's play last year, but the NFL average is double digit interceptions. Even the best QB's get double digit int's. Drew Brees has had only one year in which he threw less than 10.

My issue with Jake was not so much that he was throwing int's, it was when he was throwing them. Its one thing to get an int on a long ball early in the first quarter when you are testing the defense. Basically, thats not much different than a punt. But if you are throwing them at critical times of the game, or throwing a lot of them in the biggest games, you are hurting the team. Starting with the 2005 NFC championship game, Jake was doing more and more of that.
