Hunter Cantwell: 1 day as backup QB?

First of all I said beyond filling seats. No comment on the hype other than I think its more than jerseys. As far as Cantwell, I guess we'll see who was right.

Then you must not understand football finances then. It is all about filling seats and corporate boxes and concessions. The team that gets no appearances on MNF gets paid the same in TV revenue as the guy who appears 5 times.

What are you talking about otherwise.

As for who is the backup, it is wide open. I don't really have a clue whether it will be Cantwell or Clausen at this point. I am just saying the hype means nothing to Fox and won't determine who gets the role. It will be about preseason and who can better run the offense if Moore goes down.

I went to the morning practice today, Cantwell and Pike did not look good at all. Seen alot of overthrown balls. Moore and Clausen look dead on. Moore looks like a starter as Clausen looked confused when he heard footsteps from the defense.

Ah I did not know that. That's a pretty pooty situation to be in. Don't follow much Bills football. They Pretty entrenched with Edwards or does Brohm have a shot to start? Would you say it's more Moore/Clausen or Delhomme/Moore?

I'm not sure. To be honest, I had to look it up, as last I remembered he was with Green Bay. I didn't even know he went to Buffalo.

You should try telling the city of cleveland that hype doesn't translate into money right now.

As far as Clausen being the backup, your fantasy that the better player always gets the spot actually requires a "better" player. Most times when you are dealing with rookies or untested guys like Cantwell you simply don't know how they will perform in a game situation. As I said before, all else equal, this is Clausen's job to lose. They gave him some money and a four year contract with the added benefit of national hype. Cantwell would have to be head and shoulders above Clausen the way that Clausen would have to be head and shoulders above Moore to land the position. I am more than happy to be checked on this come the opener, right or wrong.

The thing is, you didn't specify "all things being equal" earlier in this thread. You, and others, were implying that Clausen was a lock for the #2 job, no matter what Cantwell does. If Cantwell is not better than Clausen on the field, then Clausen absolutely deserves to be promoted. I don't think anybody is gonna argue against that.

Fair enough, I apologize for not being more specific.

As MC said, you never said that if Clausen and Cantwell play equally well, then Clausen will get the 2 spot. If that were the case, then you could make an argument that Clausen is actually a better player given he learned the system and performed as a rookie as well as a guy who has been in the system for a year already.

I would totally agree that Clausen is going to be here because he has a four year contract which is pretty cheap. And he will be given every opportunity to play as we want to see how he does in a game situation. Frankly I have been saying for weeks that Clausen could be the starter next year if it comes down to money and Moore doesn't have a very good year. Moore will want 6-7 million a year and Clausen is signed for half that.

My point is that hype doesn't get you much if you can't back it up on the field at game time. The battle will be won in the preseason based on who plays better not who was drafted higher. All a high draft position guarantees you is that they will hang onto you longer and give you more chances to win the job just as we have done with Jarrett. Jarrett had plenty of hype coming in a few years ago but it didn't translate to playing time. The same is true of Brown last year.

Yeah but Jarrett is still around and a starting spot behind Smith is still his to lose. That is my point. It's certainly not because of his past production. It's because of a big contract and hype. You are correct though that if he can't produce he won't play.
