Hunter Cantwell: 1 day as backup QB?

He had to be mobile because he spent his college life running away from defenses since he had no offensive line. He is pretty mobile and was doing fine running until his toe injury. I see nothing wrong with him mechanics though. ESPN ran an article on him about throwing the perfect spiral. He has very sound mechanics.

Exactly. He looked very awkward last season because he was playing on two torn tendons in his toe (tough mamma jamma!).

I looks plenty athletic to me. Sure he's no Michael Vick, but who is?

I agree I was just pointing out that he would adjust his release (i.e., half release aka slanging) when he needed to live.

1. Why is Cantwell getting more reps?

2. Have you been to Spartanburg and watched the two of them work?

Your break is the same thing Packers' fans about Brohm...I'm just saying. Hypotheticals are interesting, but reality is better.

I'm not projecting. I'm just reporting on what is actually happening, in Spartanburg.

Finally, for one, these are the four best qbs we have ever had in camp, talent-wise.

1. Because just like any other position, every player is gonna get snaps up and down the depth chart.

2. No but I've read all of the local writers observations along with the members of this board including this one...

His arm looks good to me. I've been making a point of comparing the velocity and accuracy of the QB's and Clausen is right up there with Moore in both categories (except for some of Clausen's accuracy issues on short crossing routes that have already been mentioned). There is a noticable step down in both velocity and accuracy with Pike, spiral is not as tight and it doesn't get where it's going as fast. Cantwell clearly has the strongest arm, but seems to hang onto the ball a little too long and struggles with accuracy.

Brohm never really had a high ceiling to begin with (which is why Green Bay cut him after 1 season) while Clausen does and played in a similar type of offensive scheme as we do. Its only common sense when you add these things together and realize our first pick of the 2010 draft isn't going to sit behind last years 5th string QB behind AJ freaking Feeley. So much for your "reality".

This arguement will be decided during preseason as it is with any coaching staff that has half a clue.

Whoever the Panthers feel gives the team the best chance to win after preseason will be the number 2 QB on the depth chart.

The difference between the two players is there is a chance that Cantwell could be traded/released within the next year.

There is no chance of this with Clausen.

It'll likely be like this:

Moore goes out for one play with a sore arm after a hit or something, Cantwell will come in.

Moore is going to miss one game, cantwell will come in.

Moore tears ACL week one, Clausen gets the season.

It's pretty common for a team to have two back ups in the same sort of position, one long term, one short term, the Redskins did it when they drafted Campbell and chances are it's what they'd do in Cleveland too.

I honestly don't believe there is as much pressure on the coaching staff to promote Clausen as some of you think. I hope he turns out to be a superstar, but he shouldn't be given anything he doesn't earn on the field. It's not like he just signed a $50 million deal and is coming to a 2-14 team who is desperate for a starting QB. In fact, I haven't seen the breakdown of Clausen's deal, but his base salary for 2010 is probably less than what Matt Moore is making this year.

You are ignoring the role that hype plays in this business. Every quote I've read is that for every 5 authograph signings 4 are going to Clasen and Steve Smith. He is a guy that puts the Panthers in the national news and will translate into money beyond filling seats. Now don't get me wrong, if he sucks he ain't gonna play plain and simple. But again, all things being equal, the backup job is Clausen's to lose during preseason and not Cantwell's. Cantwell is backup right now because of seniority and nothing else.

Clausen is not going to fill any seats particularly when he doesn't play. With the PSL structure as it is, there are only 6,000 seats to sell anyway. Other than people buying his jersey, he will translate into no extra money for the Panthers. TV money for example gets split no matter who is playing and which team is the biggest draw. The only thing that differentiates money from one team to the other is ticket sales and box seats and other stadium perks.

Cantwell is the backup because he has a better arm and knows the system better. Clausen has to prove that he can do a better job if he wants the backup role.

Hype:rolleyes:. Yeah, Clausen will get us another 30 seconds of national coverage a week, and then they will all go back to slurping the Cowboys and debating about whether Farvre will play again.

As far as filling seats, I wouldn't be surprised if Armanti Edwards puts more butts in the seats than Clausen. Besides, what difference is it gonna make whether Clausen is #3 or #2, when it comes to fan support? Either way, he's sitting the bench and will probably stay there all season.

Wasn't Brian Brohm a fairly highly touted QB out of Louisville? Whatever happened to that guy?

He's competing with powerhouses Trent Edwards and Ryan Fitzpatrick to be the Bills' starting quarterback next season.

I say that with my tongue planted firmly in cheek, as I don't think Edwards is as bad as many make him out to be.

Ah I did not know that. That's a pretty shitty situation to be in. Don't follow much Bills football. They Pretty entrenched with Edwards or does Brohm have a shot to start? Would you say it's more Moore/Clausen or Delhomme/Moore?

First of all I said beyond filling seats. No comment on the hype other than I think its more than jerseys. As far as Cantwell, I guess we'll see who was right.
