Hunter Cantwell: 1 day as backup QB?

I was originally a Jimmy Clausen fan first, and then a Notre Dame fan. I was originally a Jacksonville Jaguars fan,but I like to root for the local team and I moved to Winston Salem, North Carolina about two years ago.

Since then my best friend here has turned me onto the Carolina Panthers and I do plan on joining the ranks full time. I actually just purchased my first pair of tickets to a NFL Game just last night, and for the Panthers. Going to the December 19th game against the Cardinals! I can't wait to see the action live.

I have been to the last 3 practices. In this regard: 1. Cantwell is clearly getting the majority of the #2 snaps. 2. Cantwell is closer to Moore, than Clausen is to Cantwell.

I agree completely. They have seen enough of Cantwell in my opinion or they would not have drafted 2 QB's this year.

I'm not Marty Hurney, but maybe they drafted 2-qbs, because the 2-qbs they had on their roster, Moore and Cantwell, are free agents at the end of the 2010 season. Without drafting a qb, the Panthers could have, theoretically, been without a qb to start the 2011 season.

If the #2 has been given to Clausen, then why waste those valuable reps on Cantwell. Again, today, Cantwell is the #2.

The investment side of things, regarding qbs, is interesting in the NFL. A few recent cases that proves that the NFL cares more about production, than investment. If this investment line of thinking was viable, then: Matt Flynn wouldn't have been #2 and Brian Brohm #3; Tyler Thigpen wouldn't have been in front of Pat White; Bruce Gradkowski wouldn't have started over JaMarcus Russell, etc.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out. The thing that sticks out to me is: 1) Clausen's college coaches' team, KC, passed on him 3-times in the draft, along with every other NFL team 2) Scherer is trying to change Clausen's throwing motion 3) Clausen is checking down on a lot of intermediate and deep throws which at least for the 3-days of camp I've seen, is going to be a staple of the Panthers offense, this yearand 4) as well as Cantwell is playing and the potential that Clausen, seemingly has, I think it is a safe bet that Moore, Clausen or Cantwell will be traded before the start of the 2011 season.

KC passed on Clausen because they overpaid for a QB last year and have so many holes in thier roster that they could not afford the luxury of drafting a QB just for the hell of it.

Also, I am 100% positive that Wiess had 0% input into how the draft went down.

Anyone who really thought or thinks that Cantwell is going to be the #2 guy is an idiot. Clausen isn't ready to start yet but they are going to make sure that he gets the most reps because if Moore shits the bed then Clausen is going to be the man.

Your last post was thought provoking, I think you have an interesting perspective.

As far as Weis I agree with others that 1) he had zero input in their draft and was surely begging them to draft JC, and 2) they severly overpaid for Tom Brady's backup. On the last point - it hightlights that this is a business and you stand behind your investments until you can't. JaMarcus is a perfect example of a sunk cost - he was never going to be good and they had guaranteed him the money. With Clausen, he is anything but sunk. In fact, he's only been in TC a few days! They are definitely going to give him the benefit of the doubt on second string, that's where you and I differ. I think it's Clausen's job to lose and you think it's Cantwell's. I think Cantwell is #2 by seniority right now and nothing more. Expect Clausen to take over the second team fully before the first pre-season game unless he really sh*ts the bed.

As far as Clausen's throwing motion, I think that if anything they are working on a quicker release. After all, this is to quote SI "the kid with the golden arm", who not to mention was on the cover of ESPN Magazine the week of the draft with the title "Jimmy Clausen throws the perfect spiral". Just sayin'...

I saw them at camp also Saturday. There was Moore, Clausen, and then then the other 2 guys. Moore's realease was quicker than every other QB and he seemed to move quicker. Cantwell and Pikes throwing motion was horrible.

Clausen will be above Cantwell when it counts, unless Fox goes into Jake mode and proclaims Cantwell as a quarterback who gives them the better chance to win over Clausen because Cantwell threw a game-losing pick six in the last second of the Panthers/Giants preseason game, ruining a potential nice little comeback and some more droning by Tony Kornheiser.

Then I read Bradshaw saying he has a bad release, and I look at the tape and don't find any problems with it. In fact he was accused by some last year of "slinging" the football to the point where it was coming out almost side-armed when he saw a receiver open.

He had to be mobile because he spent his college life running away from defenses since he had no offensive line. He is pretty mobile and was doing fine running until his toe injury. I see nothing wrong with him mechanics though. ESPN ran an article on him about throwing the perfect spiral. He has very sound mechanics.
