its very quiet, Carolina working on something, no sense in waiting for players to sign elsewhere when you have plenty of cap available.

Not necessarily, they very well could just be waiting on the players who will get cut in the coming weeks/months as cap casualties and wanting to have the cap room to be able to offer more than other teams (likely our best shot at finding immediate pass rushing help for next year at this point).

Also wouldn't be the end of the world to try and roll some cap into next offseason to have more space to go after bigger FA's. That's a better move than signing guys who really won't help much more than whoever else we can get on minimum or rookie deals.

Notice a pattern; Wharton, Pat Jones, Bobby Brown, Moehrig, Dowdle are all coming off their rookie contracts. Dan and Brandt had a strategy

I think the oldest free agent was 28--most around 26

I noticed this too. I think it's about finding guys entering their peaks while also staying a bit younger to supplement our rebuild.

    • Smitty has a bit of the Chris Simms complex.  Became a personality, identified a mid rounder who became great (Kupp), and then ran on that juice for a while, as someone with that keen eye for talent.  But over time, the hit rate adjusts and you see he's not the best at it by any means.  And now they have a falsely built-up confidence in their evals and get all defensive about it.   It's all good.  I hope McMillan proves to be a top-WR in the league and shuts these knuckleheads up.  Now it's time to get this team rev'd up for a big improvement year.
    • Yards aren't really a good measure alone. He was one of the best QBs in the league in that stretch in most categories but yardage, heh. He definitely was not Burrows but he was pretty good.  Averaged 210 yards passing, 20 yards rushing a game, plus 2 TDs a game.  I'd like to see him continue to improve, but projected over a season those games were just under 4k combined yards (~3600 passing), 35 TDs, 13 TOs. Good for a starter, though not superstar-esque. His raw passing numbers would have been top 15ish, but he proved himself rushing so I don't think that should be ignored.  For me personally I want to see the high level of play over a season. And he still sometimes has several series that are just total head scratchers - I'd like to avoid that, heh.  May be play calling there too.
    • Tepper hasn't changed, he's keeping his ego and bad decisions out of full public view.  Dave's just making the same bad decisions largely behind closed doors.  He's at least self aware enough to know he's not a fan favorite and that's why he's largely taken a back seat to media exposure.  I serious doubt it was some inflection moment, epiphany, course correction or humbleness that Dave had come to realize.
