Just curious...

If not, what are your musical genre preferences?

I'm looking to expand my itunes collect and find people to collaborate with.

I'm mostly hip-hop, but I also listen to a little bit of metal.

I love music, and I'm always looking for new stuff.

The only things I don't really like are yodelling, polka, and ska... Sometimes Reggae.

I'm a musician. I can play guitar, bass, drums, piano, a little violin, and I also do vocal work. Right now my band is recording our EP. We have 16 songs written thus far, and have 4 recorded but not mastered.

The genre is very broad. I would say we are 50% heavy metal, and the other 50% is essentially every other type of music I have ever liked. Jazz, country, pop, adult-contemporary, and some show-tune type stuff.

I don't understand the question..."musician" is someone who can play a musical instrument with some amount of talent, whereas "hip-hop" usually just steals, or "samples" other peoples music.

As far as music goes, I haven't heard anything new that was worth a damn in so long, it's pathetic.

When I made beats, I used a midi controller (basically a usb synthesizer) to write melodies for them... I actually preferred that method to sampling... The drum sounds are usually either synthetic, or actual sampling of real instruments...

That said, there are ways to "sample" while destroying the integrity of the original and making a sound/sample your own... The musicality of sampling goes into how you layer drums/other instruments over a sample to make it your own...

"makin beats" is the half assed way to drum sounds. Sampling is plaigarism.

The computer program is merely used to sequence it... much like tracking an album... The only difference is that you aren't using live instruments (even though a lot of producers do)...

Basically, using a synth is like using a high tech piano... and if you don't think synths require musical talent, look up Mandre... one of the most underrated musicians of all time...

Using a synth isn't really like using software. You actually have to live play. With software you aren't recording, you are mapping. I can give someone who has never picked up an instrument access to something like Fruity Loops and they can create something that at least resembles a song. It requires absolutely no talent, but it is fun!

I can see what you are saying... but FL does have a record button, and I have played many melodies live just like you would with Pro Tools...

FL is easy though, and you can drag and drop sounds and come up with some nice sounding commercialized stuff...

Kind of off the current topic, but I have dabbled in remixing/mashups in the past too.. This was one of my favorites I did...

It was originally a Tupac/Bone Thugs song called Thug Luv... I got the instrumental, and Tupac's verse acapella... Then I dropped a Tech N9ne (one of my favorite rappers) verse on it and basically made a new song with Tech and Pac... That beat is still one of my favorite beats of all time...

I'm just old school when it comes to music. If you can't replicate your CD or single live on stage then it's not worth doing.

Don't get me wrong, electronic sounds can add quite a bit of spice to songs. But you've got to be able to replicate it live.

Best example I can give is Rob Zombie. Terrible voice, cleaned up 1000 times over in the studio. Guy can barely get the words out. Take away his electronic track that is canned and run through the PA and you have a really terrible garage band with an even worse singer.

Oh you are certainly correct. Like just about anything, you CAN use it in a way that requires ability. But most people are incapable of that, and use it as a crutch.

Pfft! I can replicate it live if I bring my laptop, yo!

(this is actually the biggest part of the rap/hip-hop game in my opinion... You can drop albums twice a year and sell tons of songs while not have the talent required in another genre)

Rap/Hip-Hop is and always will be a form of hussle... but it can be a respectable one in many ways...

This is exactly why I am faced with so much critical ignorance, people judging what they don't understand.

The game is so diluted with bullshit it hurts me to think about it because I know that's how people look at me when I say that I'm a rapper or a producer, when I've been working at this for 10 years.

While I've taken the time to learn the musical and technical aspects of it, any snot nosed kid whose parents by a laptop can go rip a copy of FL off the internet and make little youtube videos for their half ass songs and call themselves a producer. This is a total misrepresentation of what hip hop is about. AND what I'm about. In my ten years I've sampled maybe 5 songs. It's just not my style. I'd rather create every sound myself. I want to be the guy when I'm retired is being sampled. Not just another jackoff who didn't have the creativity to truly be an artist.
