SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Here are eight players to watch as the Carolina Panthers take the practice field Thursday at Wofford College.

QB Matt Moore: All eyes will be on Moore, who assumes the starting quarterback job following the departure of veteran Jake Delhomme. Even though Jimmy Clausen has signed, the Panthers will likely give Moore a fairly long leash given his past success with the team. Moore was 4-1 as Carolina's starter last year and boasted a QB rating of 98.5.

DE Everette Brown: The Panthers gave up their first-round pick in 2010 to get him last year, so they really need him to start making people forget about the departed Julius Peppers.

He showed signs he can be a player and will see plenty of action even if he doesn't start. Right now he's working behind starters Tyler Brayton and Charles Johnson.

WR Armanti Edwards: The Panthers gave up a second-round pick in 2011 to get Edwards, but it may take some time for him to make the transition from college quarterback to wide receiver. In the meantime, look for Edwards to return punts and possibly see some action in the Wildcat. The Panthers haven't put in that package yet, but it could be coming soon.

DT Louis Leonard: He showed potential early last season after being acquired in a trade, but broke his ankle in a bizarre injury against Atlanta. Leonard will be asked to man the middle along with Tank Tyler and help the Panthers stuff the run. It's a position in which the Panthers need to stay healthy.

WR Dwayne Jarrett: It's now or never for Jarrett, who has been a tease in the past. He's wallowed away in obscurity for three seasons but if this former second-round pick is going to shine, the time is now. He has a chance to start opposite Steve Smith, but if he plans to beat out rookie Brandon LaFell he'll need to step up.

SS Sherrod Martin: He takes over for the hard-hitting Chris Harris, who was dealt to Chicago this past offseason for linebacker Jamar Williams. Martin played well in five starts last year and seems to have a knack for making plays. He doesn't hit as hard as Harris, but he's a faster and healthier.

FB Tony Fiammetta: With Brad Hoover gone, the Panthers are counting on Fiammetta to open holes for Pro Bowl running back DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart.

LB Jon Beason: Will he be moving to weak side linebacker for good following the injury to Thomas Davis? That's a big question and one the Panthers will need to work through as training camp unfolds. Beason is clearly their best remaining linebacker, but will moving him be a good thing? If he does move, Dan Connor will start in the middle. If he stays, Jamar Williams could get a shot on the weak side.

I'd add Dan Connor and Hardy/Norwood to the list if we're splitting hairs, but whatev...

    • That would be a great pick, he might be my favorite for us right now.
    • The coach- Canales was a rookie hc and at times looked like it. But he did manage to revamp the offense, helped Bryce not look like the biggest bust of the draft, exuded positivity,  and made the panthers watchable again. We have a viable head coach for the first time since rivera The gm- Morgan had some hits and some big misses. Hits- the ol, Coker, demani, dj at first. Misses- almost every d player signed, brooks, the jury is out on x. I get what he was trying to do with brooks/Hubbard but it blew up in his face. Hopefully he learns from his mistakes. But he did trade mingo for a 4th, managed to get a 2nd rounder this year from the Rams and I am a fan of constantly churning the bottom of the roster The draft- x can be a solid player but not until he catches the ball, brooks was a high risk pick that didn't work out, Wallace, demani and Chau Smith can be solid contributors and showed glimpses, Coker and jt should be mainstays. And flipping a 7th round lb that was about to be cut for Jackson was a great move.  The offense- had its ups and downs but Bryce has turned from one of the biggest busts in nfl history to a potential franchise qb, that change is worth its weight in gold, thielen was crafty and underrated as usual, Coker was a gem, jt was the solid but has some growing to do, and Hubbard has been awesome, the o line was much improved as well The defense- well...they set records, injuries, poor coaching (imo), bad playcalling and just plain sucking this defense needs everything to change, we need horn and Jackson back and we get brown back but we need bodies and an identity. If they can do with the def what they did with the o then we can challenge for the division bc we already have some pieces there.  Overall- this was a growth year full of questions and some of the major ones were answered(qb, coach). For the first time in a long time the season didn't end depressingly and I do have cautious optimism for next year. But they need to learn from the mistakes of 2024 and if they do I like where this team is headed. On to the draft and 2025
