Im going to lmao if Jarrett actually produces this year, and then ask, where in hell has this guy been for 3 years

He's been maturing, people forget that the kid was only 19 when he was drafted. He had a lot of maturing to do both on the field and off....

The Panthers were running in shorts and shells Monday night, so this will be the shorts and shells version of the blog.

Two main things stood out during the light night practice.

1) The notion that WR Dwayne Jarrett can't play is misguided. That's not to say he always does play, but the question isn't whether he can or not.

Jarrett had at least three highlight-reel catches, one on a Matt Moore deep ball, that had the whole crowd ooh-ing and ahh-ing. The sprawled-out one-hander on the sideline was nice too.

I understand the frustration, because he's so rarely done it in games. But when you see practices like tonight, you understand why they give him so many chances.

The WR situation just isn't setup for DJ to make it right now. They aren't cutting any rookies. They aren't cutting k.moore or wallace wright. The only way DJ makes it is if he totally shines through out preseason and they find a way to keep 7 WRs on the team. Both of these are unlikely scenarios and it's kind of obsurd to have that many WRs on your team just because you're yet again waiting for the same guy to finally break through just like you've been waiting for the past 2-3 years.

I don't see why Gettis or Moore are locks.

If Gettis is cut, thats 3 draft picks we will cut along with Stanford and Pike right now. The most we've cut under Fox before is just 1. Cutting 3 picks will make this draft look pretty bad. Moore has shined all offseason. He would have to fail miserably this preseason in order to not make it.

I don't agree with your logic, KillerKat. Cutting rookies that can't outperform people ahead of them isn't going to make our team worse. And cutting late round draft picks won't make this draft look bad. What will make this draft look bad is if Clausen and/or Edwards are busts sometime in the future.

I agree with you on one thing though, Moore will not be cut.

It will look bad because we wasted 3 draft picks and we've never cut that many before. And with this being one of the deepest draft classes of this decade due to the possible lock out next season, it would make it look worse.

Gettis won't get cut. The guy is looking pretty good. With all the other players the media is focused on gettis gets overlooked.

At the moment he would be cut. The WRs I have ahead of him are:

Smith, Jarrett, Moore, Lafell, Wright, and Edwards. If Edwards is making the team because he is going to be the starting PR then I can see space for a 7th WR but we don't have room to be worrying about 5th and 6th WRs when we need depth at too many positions.

Right now I see the FO hoping they can keep him on the PS.

Excellent point...we did, kinda, get busted with Carter who never really got more than an occassional spotlight. It was a moment of truth all too often, but he had his cheering squad.

I am certain that if he produces, and he WILL stay for now, he'll never fully shine. That is too bad.

With LaFell looking more and more like a bonafide No. 2 and Moore looking like a nice option for the slot, I see no reason to keep Jarrett another year just hoping he pans out. I used to defend the guy, saying that the No. 3 receiver in this offense rarely sees the field. I still think that's the case, but Jarrett doesn't even know the playbook after three years.

I think we'll be okay with a starting trio of Smith, LaFell and Moore. Wright has also looked strong, and he'll get a roster spot because of his special teams ability. I see both Gettis and Edwards as projects with a ton of potential.

What I'm saying here is cut Jarrett, keep Gettis.

I'd be very surprised if Jarrett is cut. In a game time situation, do you guys really want Moore to be in there over Jarrett? That's what it comes down to.

As for the amount of rookie cuts. We'll see. I have a feeling quite a few of them will be sticking around in some capacity.

As I said earlier, I think LaFell is going to be our No. 2. He'll be the blocking possession receiver that can replace Moose, and yes, if he plays as well in a game as he does in training camp, I'd be fine with LaFell in that capacity.

Kenny Moore is going to be our slot guy. I think they also might have Moore and LaFell outside with Smith playing the slot this year.

    • Hope Koch recovers (he’s stated numerous times he doesn’t like to be called “koochie”) soon. But he does not instill confidence in the crease. I don’t have any confidence in any of our goalies, healthy or not. Andersen when available gives us the best chance to win but he’s never available.    Team has to explore trade options soon.
    • Respectfully, I completely disagree. Last year we were:  32nd in Sacks. 32nd in Turnovers.  32nd in Rushing TDs allowed  29th in Scoring.  We were absolutely atrocious on defense last year and that was with a full stable of weapons in Derek Brown, Frankie Luvu and Brian Burns that played all 17 games.  Using yards per game as a metric to guage our success lacks the context that because our offense was so inept teams were not driving the length of the field, they were starting at their 40-50 yard line.  This year, our Defense ranks:  31st in Sacks. Tied for 19th in Turnovers  31st in Rushing TDs allowed 32nd in Scoring  His defense fails to get pressure, fails to turn the ball over and fails to stop the run. Three things you absolutely have to do to be successful in the NFL.  Denver meanwhile has not missed a beat without him.  If another team wants to hire him as a HC and the Panthers get two 3rds for it I'll wish him the best and pack his bags myself.
