Tag Transfer

The Saltman

Recommended Posts

I have been in Georgia now for almost 2 years. My wife's car still has NC plates on them and I need to go ahead and get my new Ga tag. They say that you have to transfer it 30 days after you move which I obviously haven't due to a big increase in cost. I was wondering if I go to a tag office to get this done will I get into some serious trouble?

it just sucks...in GA i have to pay an ad valorum tax and sales tax on the car..thats like almost 1500 bux..thats why i havent done it.

Why would you have to pay sales tax on the car? Did you just buy it? Isn't it just a matter of registering it in the state that you now live in or do you have to title it and register it in GA and they make you pay sales tax?

I just bought my dad's truck from NJ and had to pay 3% road use tax when I registered and re-titled it here.

but now that I think about it since we bought the car in 2007 we paid the nc sales tax...I dont think we have to pay sales tax again in ga but I could be wrong.

That is what I was thinking also. If you were to buy a car in NC right now and brought it to GA you would have to pay the GA sales tax but that is not what you are doing. I could be wrong but that seems logical.

You also have to pay a SC sales tax since you bought in NC and drove through SC to get to GA. It is also 3% of the sale price. I will send you a PM with the address to send the payment. Don't let the NC address confuse you.
