QB ideas that fans should abandon

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

Here's a list of things that are going to be suggested (some already have been) by a fair number of fans this offseason. I have pretty serious doubts that any of these will happen, and I'll explain why.

Trading for Matt Cassel

The Pats want a first round pick. The Panthers don't have one. Even if we did though, I wouldn't want to give it up for a guy who could easily turn into the next Scott Mitchell or A J Feely.

Picking up Donovan McNabb

Highly unlikely at this point that the Eagles let him go. Even if they do though, he's a West Coast style QB. The Panthers don't run a West Coast system and are extremely unlikely to change to one.

(this same logic explains why we shouldn't go after Jeff Garcia either)

Trading for Derek Anderson

Frankly, I wouldn't give up even as low as a seventh rounder for him. Given that the team has bigger needs, I can't see the team giving up much of anything to get a guy who's essentially a question mark. That'd be a big mistake.

Spending big money on some other free agent QB

If you've seen the free agent list, you should know there's no one likely to be out there worth big money. Of the guys that are available, none is a clear upgrade over Delhomme (some I wouldn't even take over McCown). And if you're not going to find a clear upgrade, why even bother spending the money when you've got higher priorities?

Drafting a QB in the first or second round

Fox's philosophy on this is known. Again, we have no first round pick, and nobody that could be had with a second round pick or lower is going to be ready to start as a rookie. Pretty tough to imagine Fox handing the keys over to any rookie, honestly, but to a lesser eound pick? Unlikely.

Drafting The Golden Calf of Bristol

I've seen more than one person who thinks The Golden Calf of Bristol will be the savior of the franchise. Frankly, a lot of people who know QBs aren't even convinced that The Golden Calf of Bristol will be a starter in the NFL. Others think he'll wind up switching positions. Bottom line: Unless the Panthers want to use him as a TE 9and he's better suited to an H-Back role than a pure TE) it's no likely he's coming to Charlotte.

Bottom Line: The team is today giving every indication that they will stick with Jake Delhomme as the starter next season. Teammates have rallied behind him (notably Steve Smith). And honestly, if they can still do that after last night, his rep in that locker room must be off the charts.

You can love it or you can hate it, but realistically the quarterback depth chart next season might not change...at all.

You could have just said:

We're stuck with who we have. Take your pick.

What are the chances Fox might lose some respect in the locker room if Jake is released? It's a decision that could potentially cost Fox/Hurney's job next season if the replacement doesn't get the job done.

Getting rid of Jake is not the answer. The QB position as well as every other position on the team should be subjected to open competition in training camp. Fox should step up to the plate and tell the team no ones job is safe. I want to see true competition at the QB spot rather than just handing it to Jake. Steve Smith should not have a say. Delhome's tunnel vision towards Smith has always been part of the problem. This team can win with a game manager and our run game.

I hope Jake is still around next year, but a little competition for his job might not be a bad thing. I do not think that one awful game necessarily constitutes trading or releasing him. The Panthers should focus on developing what they have (ie: Matt Moore), and hopefully Jake will be angry enough at himself to improve in the offseason. If in the first few games of the next season he is throwing five picks a game, then put in Moore or get a new QB. Jake was instrumental in getting us this far, and I think he deserves another chance (yes, I know many people believe he has had more than his share of chances). However, as usual, everyone is happy when the team is winning, but no one can take it when the Panthers lose.

Anyone who thinks Anderson would be an upgrade over either Jake or McCown should never watch football again. Or any other sport.

I would draft a QB with the second round pick next year. Jake is your starter next year, and this kid watches and learns how a quarterback leads his team. Besides, Panthers dodged a bullet this year with Jake avoiding injury. If they don't get quite so lucky next year, they have someone worthy.

I really believe we should give Matt Moore a shot at starting at QB. He was 2-1 last season in those few games he started and the game we lost was to Dallas and was by only 3 points. I really feel he has something but its just like the Panthers to not take a chance and use him. Just like with Dwayne Jarrett. I think he could be a decent receiver...we just don't use him.

Bottom line, how are we going to know if these players can play in the NFL if we don't PLAY THEM!!!

Also, I think Derek Anderson would be be a decent QB in Carolina...but just my opinion. And I don't think Michael Vick would be a good choice here...not by a long shot...

The one free agent I'd like to take a look at is Byron Leftwich. He's looked great in the few opportunities he's had this season. He's had a year and a half to fully heal and he has the desire to win and a cannon for an arm. I honestly think he should be starting over Rothlisberger.
