QB ideas that fans should abandon

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

Here's a list of things that are going to be suggested (some already have been) by a fair number of fans this offseason. I have pretty serious doubts that any of these will happen, and I'll explain why.

Trading for Matt Cassel

The Pats want a first round pick. The Panthers don't have one. Even if we did though, I wouldn't want to give it up for a guy who could easily turn into the next Scott Mitchell or A J Feely.

Picking up Donovan McNabb

Highly unlikely at this point that the Eagles let him go. Even if they do though, he's a West Coast style QB. The Panthers don't run a West Coast system and are extremely unlikely to change to one.

(this same logic explains why we shouldn't go after Jeff Garcia either)

Trading for Derek Anderson

Frankly, I wouldn't give up even as low as a seventh rounder for him. Given that the team has bigger needs, I can't see the team giving up much of anything to get a guy who's essentially a question mark. That'd be a big mistake.

Spending big money on some other free agent QB

If you've seen the free agent list, you should know there's no one likely to be out there worth big money. Of the guys that are available, none is a clear upgrade over Delhomme (some I wouldn't even take over McCown). And if you're not going to find a clear upgrade, why even bother spending the money when you've got higher priorities?

Drafting a QB in the first or second round

Fox's philosophy on this is known. Again, we have no first round pick, and nobody that could be had with a second round pick or lower is going to be ready to start as a rookie. Pretty tough to imagine Fox handing the keys over to any rookie, honestly, but to a lesser eound pick? Unlikely.

Drafting The Golden Calf of Bristol

I've seen more than one person who thinks The Golden Calf of Bristol will be the savior of the franchise. Frankly, a lot of people who know QBs aren't even convinced that The Golden Calf of Bristol will be a starter in the NFL. Others think he'll wind up switching positions. Bottom line: Unless the Panthers want to use him as a TE 9and he's better suited to an H-Back role than a pure TE) it's no likely he's coming to Charlotte.

Bottom Line: The team is today giving every indication that they will stick with Jake Delhomme as the starter next season. Teammates have rallied behind him (notably Steve Smith). And honestly, if they can still do that after last night, his rep in that locker room must be off the charts.

You can love it or you can hate it, but realistically the quarterback depth chart next season might not change...at all.

I agree with everything but the The Golden Calf of Bristol part, but that's a moot point now because he is staying in Florida for another year.

The only thing that really, reaaaaally sucks about this is that Jake isn't an 11 million dollar quarterback. We don't have a better option and we're between a rock and a hard place. We don't really have a choice but to stick with Jake (unless Moore beats him out).

The Golden Calf of Bristol isn't coming to the NFL next year he announced today.

I agree that the quarterbacks will probably the same next year. Like I think I said in another thread, my wish would be for either McCown or Moore to start next year after we dump Jake in favor of signing a washed-up vet like Charlie Batch as a backup.

of course the team has respect for Jake... look at what he has done... 18 4th quarter comebacks?

he had a really bad day yesterday... it happens. they know that.

Which is why I say, Fox needs to go first. He's the bigger problem. We have a coach who will not change his philosophy even with a guy like Smith on his team......except in a playoff game where everything he stood for he throws out the window.

I think it is a waste of time and internet space for anyone else to start another "who is our next qb?" post. He is our best option in our current position. Most people who suggest these other ignorant flukey ideas dont really understand the NFL. Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco are not available every draft, and even if they were, we do not have the staff that would be confident enough in themselves to a: start a rookie qb, b: develop one themselves. I think Matt Moore is the short longterm answer under this regime.

This year was great, for the most part, but I can think of the last two seasons where I had been disgusted with Fox. Injuries are obviously a hinderance in a teams success, but I look more for attitude in players as an indicator of a coaches effectiveness. There are two available guys out there that are not taking jobs in 09 with Schott and Cowher that would be good replacements if next year is a dud. I myself would like to see some new things from our team. We didnt have the swagger last night we had going into the Saints game. I did not see all the various packages on passing downs either. I honestly can barely tell then difference in the playcalling from Henning to Davidson. But again, its not always what plays you call, but how you run them and that is the attitude of the players instilled by the coaches.

    • The SEC were not having GT upset Georgia at home. Horrendously corrupt officiating in this game - the non-PI on 4th down and the non-targeting call on the King fumble. Good lord.
    • I like how they were about to punt the ball right before the two minute warning before being like... oh fug, this'll be too obvious we gotta try a FG then ole boy skulls one that never got more than about 12 feet off the ground. LOL!
