E. Brown's job in danger?

Jevon Kearse: 6-6/265

Jared Allen: 6-6/270

Julius Peppers: 6-7/283

Dwight Freeney: 6-1/268

Mario Williams: 6-6/295

Everette Brown: 6-1/256

Unless Brown has the skill set, raw physical abilities and the motivation of a Dwight Freeney, he doesn't even belong in the discussion. The Panthers may get lucky and find that Brown hasn't stopped growing and a couple more inches and another 15 pounds could do him wonders. Otherwise, he's nothing but a career situational pass rusher.

I could be totally wrong and the Meeks defense could do for Brown what the Colts D did for Freeney when he went for 12, 11, 16 and 11 sacks in his first 4 seasons in the league.

Exactly. A player like Julius Peppers would never get only 2.5 sacks in a season.

Do you want to compare the first 2 years of Peppers to Brown? Or any other guy on the list to Brown? Didnt think so.

Because we had such a dominant player in Peppers on the team, Brown -- in his rookie year and learning the ropes -- barely saw the field. I'm not much of a fan of determining a player's worth by stats, but even so I don't think Browns stats are a cause for concern given the little time he saw the field.

If Brown has a lackluster year this year, sure, we may have cause for concern. But I really think he'll step up and be more than a third-down rusher for us.

I agree but I think he should have pushed Brayton more then he did. I hope you're right and he has a big impact this year

McClover was released/waived by Houston after he shredded his knee in the 2008 preseason opener.

I don't know if he's in anyone's camp trying to make a comeback or if he just hung it up. Met his folks at BOA couple years ago- really nice folks and really proud of their son. Genuinely nice people.

UPDATE: Darin Gantt writes for the Herald Online that Everette Brown is routinely getting dominated by left tackle Jordan Gross during workouts. Gantt notes that this isn't a huge knock on Brown, as Gross is one of the best tackles in the league, but it also doesn't indicate that Brown has made much progress as a pass rusher (more on that below).

---

ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli writes Friday that the Carolina Panthers have been unimpressed so far with Brown, last year's second round pick: "Carolina invested a second-round pick in Everette Brown in 2009, and many felt the former Florida State standout might become the team's best pass-rush threat with Julius Peppers having left as a free agent. But Brown hasn't cracked the starting lineup and might be used only as a situational rusher if he doesn't develop some counter moves. The coaches have more confidence right now in third-year pro Charles Johnson, a third-round pick in '07 who had six sacks in 2008-09 but dropped off to four sacks the following season when he was slowed by a shoulder injury."

This season could be a critical one in Brown's development, as the Panthers will need somebody to step up and fill the void left by Peppers as a pass-rushing defensive end. If he can't, the team might be forced to address the position yet again in the 2011 draft -- unless Johnson steps up as a big-time player.

    • They don't. Add in a player like LaMelo Ball, who selectively plays when he feels like it, and you cannot compete. If your highly paid players refuse to play full time, what can you do?

    • Wow, what hard hitting journalism DJ.  What's next?  The sky is blue?  Water is non-compressible?  =P I'm totally down for trading down and acquiring more picks.  We have spent a TON of picks on failed QBs (Darnold and Baker) and paid a king's ransom for Bryce.  We need more talent, more picks, more shots at the dartboard of NFL talent!
