E. Brown's job in danger?

For the most part, defensive ends (even the hall of famers) don't do that well during their rookie season. Peppers was the exception. Just look at Mario Williams numbers from his rookie year. He played a lot more than Brown did, and yet his numbers were not significantly better. But by the second year, he had improved dramatically.

It may take Everette Brown this year or maybe even next year to fully come into his own. Although I think Peppers being gone will help him even if it hurts the team.

I think some of these guys like E Brown are coming out of college to early and the teams are drafting these youg men too high.

He was not physcially developed enough to have a reasonible expectation of starting given his stature.I think DJ is a another example.

He should impove this season but dont see him as Dwight Freeney anytime soon.I think the panthers are going to have to stunt and blitz more this year to hurry the QB.Meeks has his work cut out for him.

As far as the post, who is he going to lose his job to?I think Charles Johnson will start at one side but its not like we have a lot of competetion for the situational rusher.

It's the continuous stories like this that put me in the best possible position when the season starts.

Had a lengthy conversation about this season and my expectations today while floating in the middle of Lake Norman trying to stay cool. Do not have any expectations for the 2010 season. Attend or watch every game and don't let anything surprise you. Enjoy the good parts and understand the bad parts are gonna happen.

Above everything else, you must have a good time because there will be no football in 2011. The Carolina Panther football team in 2010 is as close to a rebuilding project as a team can afford to be in the NFL, thanks to that 2011 lockout.

Nobody is predicting that. At most folks think the lockout could extend into the preseason next year. But both sides agree there will not be a lockout. It would be disasterous to the players and teams and they know it. It just won't be worked out as soon as most folks think.

Yes and so far he has surpassed expectations. You have to be realistic, there are plenty of first rounders at there not doing squat. Brown has shown promise which is what should be expected if your lucky. It is really rare for any player at any position to be solid there very first year. These new writers don't know wtf they are talking about and are there for drama. And money.

This year and maybe even next will determine whether he is worth that first pick or not, that really can't be determined by seeing him being cycled DE, for a rookie year. You also can't decide these things in camp, because that is what they did with Jake an co. and look what happened.

All I am saying is don't call him a waste just yet, he has more playing to do.

He's surpassed expectations? I think not...and it is def. NOT rare for a player to contribute in his first year.

Players sometimes do contribute in their first year, but a lot of defensive ends do not.

Take the NFL all time sack leaders among defensive ends.

Chris Doleman - 1/2 sacks his first year

Bruce Smith - 6.5 sacks his first year

Reggie While - USFL

Richard Dent - 3 sacks

Michael Strahan - 1 sack his first year

And yes, I know sacks aren't the only measure of a players effectiveness, but this is still a telling statistic. These are the top de's in the history of the game, and they all struggled in their first season. It was unrealistic to expect brown to be a significant contributor right out of the gate.

This is the year that Stanley McClover is finally going to break out.

lol.

E. Brown is gonna be a beast, regardless. Whether it's this year or next. His acceleration speed off the line of scrimmage was ridiculous in college.

The NFL drafts on potential. Showing Promise means everything. He was a bad pick IMO but there is nothing we can do about it now but hope like hell the guy continues to show promise. What the fvck good is crying about it?

If you think "showing promise" comes in terms of 2.5 sacks, then your level of excellence is pretty low. I dont believe anyone was crying except you.

And a lot of DE's do good in their first 2 years. Look at Jevon Kearse, Julius Peppers, Jared Allen, Dwight Freeney, and Mario Wiliams. No excuses this year, it's time to put up or shutup

Exactly. A player like Julius Peppers would never get only 2.5 sacks in a season.

This just reminds me more why rookie contracts need to be fixed.

why should teams continue to pay millions of dollars when rookies rarely do poo and have such low expectations.

most players dont fully develop until year 3

Some do, but most do not. Mario Williams and Jared Allen were both starters in their first year on teams that were hurting at the DE spot. And even though Williams was a starter he still only had 4.5 sacks. I am pretty sure that Brown could have matched Williams numbers if he had played as many downs.

Fwiw, I don't think anyone here sees Brown as becoming a Peppers, or Strahan or even a Jared Allen. He could eventually put up John Abraham type numbers.

    • They don't. Add in a player like LaMelo Ball, who selectively plays when he feels like it, and you cannot compete. If your highly paid players refuse to play full time, what can you do?

    • Wow, what hard hitting journalism DJ.  What's next?  The sky is blue?  Water is non-compressible?  =P I'm totally down for trading down and acquiring more picks.  We have spent a TON of picks on failed QBs (Darnold and Baker) and paid a king's ransom for Bryce.  We need more talent, more picks, more shots at the dartboard of NFL talent!
