E. Brown's job in danger?

ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli writes Friday that the Carolina Panthers have been unimpressed so far with last year's second round pick, defensive end Everette Brown: "Carolina invested a second-round pick in Everette Brown in 2009, and many felt the former Florida State standout might become the team's best pass-rush threat with Julius Peppers having left as a free agent. But Brown hasn't cracked the starting lineup and might be used only as a situational rusher if he doesn't develop some counter moves. The coaches have more confidence right now in third-year pro Charles Johnson, a third-round pick in '07 who had six sacks in 2008-09 but dropped off to four sacks the following season when he was slowed by a shoulder injury."

This season could be a critical one in Brown's development, as the Panthers will need somebody to step up and fill the void left by Peppers as a pass-rushing defensive end. If he can't, the team might be forced to address the position yet again in the 2011 draft -- unless Johnson steps up as a big-time player.

we gave up a 1st rounder for him....

Yes and so far he has surpassed expectations. You have to be realistic, there are plenty of first rounders at there not doing squat. Brown has shown promise which is what should be expected if your lucky. It is really rare for any player at any position to be solid there very first year. These new writers don't know wtf they are talking about and are there for drama. And money.

This year and maybe even next will determine whether he is worth that first pick or not, that really can't be determined by seeing him being cycled DE, for a rookie year. You also can't decide these things in camp, because that is what they did with Jake an co. and look what happened.

All I am saying is don't call him a waste just yet, he has more playing to do.

I think everyone knew he was gonna take a year to put on some weight and learn the NFL. I my self have not been impressed with C.Johnsons pass rush ability. I think Brown should take every pass rushing down. If that makes him a situational DE so be it.

How exactly has he surpassed expectations? Showing promise doesnt mean anything.

Exactly. There are very few rookies on the offensive or defensive lines who come in and play well right away. The issue is that most rookies don't have the strength that veterans do and most of all don't have great foot or hand technique. Veterans can make up for not being as big or as strong by having great technique and understanding the tricks. Many players make a big jump between their first and second years. Others need 2 or 3 years. I remember New Orlean's fans talking about how dominant Sedrick Ellis would be his rookie year. So far he has not done much and had injury problems for his first 2 years.

Good grief. Brown came to a team with veteran 1st round picks starting at both DE spots, and this guy is assuming that the Panthers are disappointed in him because he didn't start as a rookie? Give me a break. The Panthers did exactly what they should have done...they eased Brown into the rotation and let him learn at his own pace while they still had Peppers.

There is no reason to believe E. Brown won't be a better player in his 2nd season, and it really doesn't even matter if he starts, because they're going to be rotating their DE's pretty frequently anyway.
