NFL shooting for 18 game season

The Question

Hung

I'va always heard "He was hanged," in connection with execution by rope. I looked it up, and sure enough, both the past and past participle of "hang," to kill by a rope, are "hanged."

(past and past participle hanged) transitive and intransitive verb kill somebody with rope: to kill somebody or yourself by fastening a rope around the neck and removing any other support for the body, or die in this way, especially as a form of legal execution

So, "The stockings were hung by the chimney with care," but, "Sadaam Hussein was hanged by the Iraqi government on December 30, 2006."

Season ticket holders should all be in favor of this. You are already forced to pay full price for 4 meaningless games, at least now two of them would matter.

As for the Records being broken, this isn't baseball. There are no "Sacred" records in football. The closest one would have been 16-0.

There is a great article on espn.com about this. Here is the link:

^^^ this. to prove how terrible past records hold up, behold:

anybody notice something? they are nearly ALL current players. wheres john elway? warren moon? dan fouts? bart starr? rodger staubach? and nearly every hall of fame worthy quarterback uve heard stories about? instead the stats (and records) hold jeff garcia and chad pennington up and above those players.

no football stat is sacred, it's an ever evolving sport.

I'm all for it. I don't believe adding games will water down the sport or intensity or whatever. I mean how can more football be a bad thing? A lot of people on here are asking questions that are purely speculation, a lot of ifs.

To me I can't think of anyone who really loses from this. Players will get more money, fans will get more meaningful games and better value by removing 2 preseason games, roster sizes will most likely increase so more guys will have a chance, and we'll be getting more football! As far as records, they were meant to be broken. They change every single year anyways.

Also I don't think players will be playing much more than everyones saying. They'll probably play around a total of 5 extra quarters per season (2 qtrs the 1st preason game, 1 qtr the 2nd game), which is like playing 1 playoff game + overtime. Do you think teams that consistently make the postseason each year will have significantly bigger long-term health problems then teams like the Raiders?

Sorry for the rant, I just don't understand the argument against it.

Hell yes!! Preseason is such a waste ... if our players MUST get hurt, let it be in a game that counts for something!!!

I personally would love to see this. I understand about the records and all, but I don't get off on stats like some people do. I just rather see more "quality" football!!

As a fan that understands it will be more difficult to decide the finial roster in only 2 weeks of pre-season, I don't like it.

As a fan with limited exposure to the players at this time of year, sure. But I would bet that you could take a look at our roster and pare that list down to 53 and may be different from the actual final roster (or wrong) on 5-8 players. The coaches has access to the players for all OTAs as well as film from college and NFL games, even Canadian and UFL to review. They may be off on a couple final roster decisions but we're talking about the low end of the roster. Gems, even undrafted, will shine early and often.

When the players are asked they don't even want to think about two more games because the 16 is demanding enough.

They get paid enough, they can play 2 more weeks!!

Also if they are cutting 2 preseason games - what's the complaint?! Oh yea - they are bitch about playing preseason games.

Long story short -- everybody wants less work for the money, at least this way they actually earn the money that they are getting paid!!

i think its a bad idea for the simple fact this will tear down there bodies faster. remember football is a collusion sport and this will wear out the players a lot sooner. every team will have to expand their roster size and more money would have to be kicked out. im sorry you dont fix anything thats not broken.

I dont like it without an expansion of the roster and the addition of a second bye week.

And Ill join the chorus of: Records? Don't care about records!

This, and maybe add 2-3 practice squad spots that are "hands off"- these guys are on the PS, but other teams can't try and sign them.

Laughing at all the "poor players need their rest" posts- bitches make 5 million dollars a year, they can afford a better mattress.

They usually end up retiring on the money they make, you know. And not all of them make that much money or play for that many years.

Oh, maybe they should plan for their future after football, but why would you plan for another career after your current one? It would be wiser to invest money, but it's hard to do that if you end up with health problems after your current career.
