Who should be the starter Moore or Clausen?

Sorry dude, the Hunter Cantwell hype is directly related to the Jimmy Clausen contract negotiations. It provides leverage to the team. The guy has a great arm but you are making a The Golden Calf of Bristol sytle bet to let him run the offense. Clausen may have less experience but mechanically he is already a better fit.

Clausen has a lot more to prove than people are willing to admit. I think odds favor him being a success just as much as they favor him ending up like the last great pro style ready Notre Dame QB Weiss had.

It's amazing the power of a few articles has on fan's opinions. Beginning of the year, everyone agreed Cantwell was trash. He was our 5th string QB last year. Behind AJ Feeley! Now suddenly he's the next best QB we have despite what we've seen of him in the past.

Fox had his depth chart wrong ever since the end of the 07 season.

This.

Another (fairly) recent example was when that article came out saying that C.J. Wilson was going to be our next starting cornerback, and how great he was. Before that, no one was talking about him. Now that Munnerlyn has pretty much secured the nickel spot, no one is talking about him again.

The difference between CJ Wilsona and Hunter Cantwell is huge. Hunter Cantwells junior year he was rated the number one junior QB prospect in the country. It was widely believed he was going to be a first round pick. The guy always had a cannon and there were always high hopes for him. But then Dr. Cox from the sitcom series Scrubs took over as coach of Louisville and single handedly ruined the futures of Brian Brohm, Hunter Cantwell, and University of Louisville football prgram.

I wasn't doggin Navy in any way. Only pointing out that Matt Moore has faced and won against NFL level competition while Clausen has only faced college level competion. And not the best college competition either.

I hope he becomes the next Joe Montana, but until he proves it on the field against NFL caliber competition, he is merely another college quarterback who still has a lot to prove.

Nah, didn't mean to imply that. Simply pointing out that Notre Dame and Jimmy Claussen lost to some teams who not close to Navy with respect to skill, talent, coaching and winning.

And you're right, Claussen is just another college QB who lost more than he won and was drafted with high hopes in the NFL.

Anyone with half a clue should want Clausen to sit AT LEAST 1 year, if not 2-3...

Also, anyone who has watched Moore play shouldn't expect Moore to bomb to the extent that Clausen should see the field this year, or next..

Let's hope Clausen sits for 2 years.. that means we have solid QB play (which we can get draft picks for and set our team up well) and Clausen gets a chance to catch up to the NFL in an appropriate fashion...

This means you MIGHT want to root for Moore. Draft picks and a future franchise QB would be the reasons...

I agree.

Add that as I have said for some time, if Clausen is our quarterback by week 8 as some speculate we are in a world of hurt. Moore will have to be doing very poorly and we will be on a losing streak.

If Moore is the starter and Clausen is sitting and gaining valuable experience watching and waiting we are likely in a good situation and will be winning more than we lose.

There is very little Clausen could do to be named the starter in game 1. Moore will have to injured for that to happen.

I wouldn't be surprised if Cantwell keeps the 2nd string status during camp and the preseason if he plays well. The last time we had a highly touted rookie start for us at quarterback was 2001 when we finished the season 1-15.

I agree with this except 1) the team doesn't need to be awful to start a rookie QB - enter Mark Sanchez, and 2) comparing Clausen to a 1-15 season is just like comparing him to Brady Quinn... zero correlation.

I agree that the best thing for Clausen's development is to sit this year.

However, The only way I see Clausen sitting behind Moore next year is if the powers that be decide that Moore is our QB of the future, and move away from Clausen (which would take one hell of a year by Moore, and a seriously disappointing one by Clausen). The reason is simple. Moore will be a UFA after this season, and if he plays well enough to be considered a legitimate starter next year, he will want to be paid like a starter. And not for a one or two year deal. If he shows that he is a capable starter in this league, he (and his agent) know someone will pony up a nice long-term deal that would pay him much more than he would make here.

yeah, if you ignore the fact both came from the exact same college team, prepared for the NFL in the exact same pro ready offense, under the exact same HC. Also, if you ignore the facts there were similar question marks in regards to how good there long ball was (which matters in a play action offense).....there is zero correlation.
