Beason confirms move to the weakside...

As much as I hate it, Beason moving to weakside means that Davis will likely not play here again.
That could happen but it won't likely be solely due to Beason moving. He has had 2 ACL injuries in a row and may want a big contract heading into a lockout year. The Panthers would much rather have Davis than do without him. After all we invested years in developing him and he is a first rounder just coming into his own.

It may come down to a numbers game and he might not be the only guy who get caught in it.

I hope we look at Jamar Williams/James Anderson a bit more at WLB before we make this move official...specifically Jamar Williams

Jamar Williams was the back-up for Lance Briggs, WLB in pretty much the same Cover 2 system, and all I hear about is how much Bear fans rave about him and how they were perfectly content on letting Briggs walk when he has his dispute.

James Anderson has the experience and the athleticism to do well.

I guess this depends on how well Connor looks at MLB vs. how well anybody else looks at WLB because I think Beason will be an animal anywhere

I thought Derrick Brooks was the WLB in the Tampa Defense. Typically its the position in this defense that has the opportunity to make the most plays as they have more options and can use their nose for the ball.

That said, I don't like this move. Beason is a stud MLB. I don't know if he has the speed or coverage skills to excel at WLB. Big risk.

He definitely has the speed and coverage skills, one of the best there is. But how good of a pass rusher is he? I've seen him blitz a little, but never have noticed any disruption. He will be called upon to blitz more on the outside.

Anybody who thinks Beason isn't fast enough or good enough in coverage for WLB is dare I say it, mistaken.

Maybe watching a former saftey play WLB has skewed your view a little bit. Beason's not super fast but he's plenty fast enough to keep up with even the elite TE's. Slot receiver wouldn't be a total disaster.

...and Beason played safety before he played LB, not at the level Davis did, but he had enough speed to be considered a safety at one time. Beason says Davis is the biggest athletic freak on the team now that Peppers is gone. Beason is not as fast as Davis, so Davis is more ideally suited towards WLB than Beason, but Beason is fast enough to be effective at WLB.

Anyone doubting the significance of the WLB postion in our defense should ask themselves why Davis was leading the team in tackles by a good margin prior to his injury.

Doubt that, even if Beason is the league defensive MVP playing WLB all year he's also the best MLB we have on the roster and Davis is faster than Beason, so Davis at WLB + Beason at MLB > Beason at WLB.

Living in New Jersey and being a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte I do not reall have a college football team to follow. So the teams I watch the most are Penn State and Rutgers. I do agree that Beason should play WLB in this system because it is the most important, but what scares me the most is Dan Connor. This guy couldnt even cover his kids underneath the blanket at night. We will be ripped to shreds over the middle on short passes. Historically the Panthers give up a lot over the middle and Dan Connor will not be preventing that.

Davis will be back here if he's willing to take a contract loaded with incentives. Two ACL tears in a row is pretty bad, but at least if there is a lockout he'll have the full 2 years to recover from it.

We definatley will draft a defensive player next year. Marshall is probably gone so CB will be a big need, DT is a lot better than people think but they could still use some talent, and DE may need another rusher if nothing works out.

A great thing about drafting an OLB is that if davis stays healthy he can just play at SLB, if he gets injured then the guy will play at WLB.
