Panther Selection on 'ESPN's 2010 Top Prospects' a Mild Surprise

Fox uses the TEs more than a lot of teams do. In fact we have multiple formations where we use 2 TE sets. The real issue is how Fox uses them. I like to see TEs used as a receiving weapon who can block okay. Fox prefers a TE that can block well and catch okay. I certainly hope that Barnidge can do both well. Problem is that guys who can do both are very rare which is why we have looked for one for a long time with not great results.

But to say that Fox doesn't value TEs is surely not true. Otherwise he wouldn't have spent 3-5th round picks on them.

BTW Wesley didn't do much under Fox because he was recovering from injury.

To tell you the truth I don't know how they grade them on everything. I think you can look at the overall but also need to look at the categories to get your analysis. And I sure that you can't seperate the TE from the rest of the line on a running play so there is likely some room for inaccuracy. Still the overal analysis certainly suggests that Barnidge is the best receiver and certainly not a problem blocking to the point that he shouldn't get more reps.

that's odd. Seems like as proud as they are of their work they would tell us how they figure it out. Maybe they're afraid of people stealing their formulas?

I never said anything about him not playing rookies. I think he plays plenty of Rookies. But I do think he puts too much faith in veteran savvy over some guys with fresher legs. He certainly knows how to identify some older role players to come in and do very well, but he seems to really hang on to some of these guys for too long.

If you notice one thing I actually left of one of the biggest myths on here that D-will was playing so much better than foster during his first two years when really he didn't start to look much better until the 2nd half of 2007 when he actually did start to get more playing time.

Fresh legs don't mean squat if the brain is telling them to go in the wrong direction. A lot of those younger guys just didn't know what to do or how to do it yet, so they didn't start. D-Will is a perfect example of this, and he has even admitted it. Plus, his legs weren't so fresh anyway, which is why it took a lecture from Vinny Testaverde to convince him to start working out harder in the off-season. Since that happened, D-Will has been twice the player that he was early on.

I guess it was the QBs fault that Fox wasnt calling any plays that involed throwing to him just like its Jake and Moores fault that he isnt calling for any plays that goes Garys way either.

hey bird brain, you think he's got the TE's out there playing rubix cube or something? if the tight ends are open and nobody else is, the QB throws to them.

Here is a link on the site which tells you how they grade things. It is in the about section. It was obviously written in 2008 because it refers to the 2007 season but obviously the data presented in the player's rating section was from the 2009 season. It look like the site has been around since the 2007 season.

They profess to look at every play in every game.

yeah I found that but I wanted to see some numbers. I think they're protecting their viability or something it seems like a lot of journalists use them.

That site and Football Outsiders get quoted quite often. There aren't very many sites that rate every player instead of the groups of players like the offensive line as a whole. Best of all they are free.

There are a number of stat sites which require subscriptions to receive and are used by a number of professional writers as well.

LOL at you fools blaming Jake. Please leave this board.

Right after you do.

I'm not blaming delhomme for anything, but to ignore the tendencies of the qb when talking about tight ends catching passes, is beyond foolish.

Jake has never been one to lean on the te. Wish I knew why. Lord knows he would have cut down on his int. If he had leaned on the te more.

Seems to me we used the TE last year with and without Jake. We threw to them around 25% of the time. If you count running backs as well, the total number of passes going to someone other than the wide receiver was almost 50%. Exactly how many times should we be throwing to someone else besides the receivers. And by the numbers Jake threw to the TE just as much as Moore did. So I don't know that will change much this year. I only hope that we throw more to Barnidge who can actually do something once he catches it instead of King who rarely if ever gets any yards after the catch.

Who knows, without Jake back there Moore or Clausen might be keen on dumping it off to the Tight End...hope so...

Can't wait for Panthers football!!!

That would be great just like David Carr did....................

Oh wait..............................

Nevermind............................
