Panther Selection on 'ESPN's 2010 Top Prospects' a Mild Surprise

Lets put one myth to bed and that is King is a great blocker and Barnidge sucks. This site did an analysis of play last year and Barnidge was rated the best receiver and best blocker of the three. Guess who was worst. Yeah, Jeff King

Where on that sight do the explain how they come up with those values, I can't find it. I'd like to see it before I really weigh in.

But here a few things that I think might be skewing Barnidge's stats.

Barnidge took signifigantly less snaps, 65% less than King

His YAC is also really, really high. That's to his credit though. He's very fast and can get behind guys, then he's strong enough to finish the play. Still if he gets snaps on a consistent basis and teams start paying more attention I don't know if he could sustain such a high avg. on his catches and YAC.

The 2 games where Barnidge had a lot of snaps were with a completely healthy O-line against Arizona and New Orleans. His next highest game with his snaps was against the Giants. Again, to his credit he could have been apart of these great rushing performances but at the same time we were REALLY clicking on those games. If he were to get more snaps then I think again his avg is going to drop down a bit more.

So I don't really feel like the stats are really telling the whole story. I'd like to see how they grade them though, if I don't know that I can't really weigh in.

To tell you the truth I don't know how they grade them on everything. I think you can look at the overall but also need to look at the categories to get your analysis. And I sure that you can't seperate the TE from the rest of the line on a running play so there is likely some room for inaccuracy. Still the overal analysis certainly suggests that Barnidge is the best receiver and certainly not a problem blocking to the point that he shouldn't get more reps.

It's amazing how a fan will bring something up on a message board, such as "Fox refuses to play rookies", "the Panthers never throw to TE's", or "every other QB on the Panthers roster spread the ball around more than Delhomme", and the next thing you know, 4-5 other fans agree with it and it becomes an assumed fact by the majority. Yet, when you actually look at the evidence, it turns out that Fox actually does play rookies if they earn it (what a concept), the Panthers do throw it to TE's, and Jake actually spread the ball around just as much as Matt Moore, it just didn't seem that way because the results were different.

Hey man, that is just how we roll.

Barnidge would already be an all pro TE on any other team. Too bad Fox wouldnt know what a good pass catching TE was if it beat up him upside his skull.

Something tells me this year may be different. I'm no Fox fan but he and Davidson have never had real passing game (requires more than just Smitty and Jake). Maybe they will open it up; then again maybe not.
