I don't know how I feel about that.  He turned heads at the SR bowl and looked very fast in his new body (265 lbs).  He turned heads at the combine.   I figured he would shoot up boards.  When asked about his sack total, he called himself, "an all-around player who focused on being the best player for his team, not just chasing sacks," fwiw.

Oh, and another example of a player with no real production in college who had double digit sacks in the NFL:  

Odafe Oweh 

Penn State player who didn't have a sack in his last season, but was drafted by the Ravens in 2022 and had 10 sacks in 2024.

It looks at first glance that PFF really downgraded Graham after the combine.  I seriously doubt he goes past us in any scenario.  If morgan wants dawgs then this kid is the alpha dog of the draft.  Hes not sexy but your defense gets immediately better the second you draft him.  He and walker would change the tone of the defense from the jump.

I can go down the list with double digit sacks in college and give you a list of busts.  Stewart has dropped 30 pounds.  He has athleticism.

So one. Who was a third round pick because of his lack of college production. If we're talking third round this becomes a completely different risk/reward conversation.

The one thing the vast majority of NFL busts have in common is that they had the athleticism.

Every year around this time people fall in love with athletic freaks who didn't produce and the one thing most of them have in common is that they will go on to continue not producing in the NFL. It's rare for guys to see their production increase at a higher level of competition. Not non-existent but definitely far from the norm.

Nah. I’m not a fan of us picking Stewart ahead of say…pick 25. But he’s going to give you more than Brown. He’s going to be able to hold the edge and give you some pressures because of his size, power, athleticism, and effort. He’s a real NFL player, he just isn’t a premier pass rusher because he doesn’t have that win instantly outside move. Brown was a lil guy with a good spin move that didn’t work against NFL OT with NFL OT reach.

First rounder, but not a top 10 pick. Pick 31 I think? Different ball game. Top 10 pick…. you got to hit the sure thing.

Give me Stewart over Graham all day. I’ve watched Graham’s highlights, and there are a couple DTs in this draft I’d take over him. Compare hit tape to Derrick Brown’s or Jalen Carter’s college tape. Those guys jump off the film as top 10 interior DL plus had the measurables to boot.

I think he’ll do well as a 3Tech but it’s not a scheme fit for us…right now., unless we plan on transitioning back to 4-3. He’s not a 2 gapper.

Just to play devils advocate, Danielle Hunter was pick #88.. Picking a player similar to Hunter’s profile at pick 8 is extremely risky.

I think he is one of the "4 blue chip players" in this draft the scout was talking about.  (Carter, Hunter, Graham, and the fourth could be any number of players-personally, I am thinking there are only 3)

Graham is the safe bet, and you run to the podium with that pick, even though nobody runs to the podium any more.

Too much risk--but I see what they are talking about.  I have not heard the cliche "workout warrior" any more, and he could be just that.  If he is anything close to Myles Garrett, you take him.  If he is anything like YGM, you don't.

I see that, but I am guessing that we will upgrade Robinson and add a 2 gapper.  I could be way off, and getting the DL right could be viewed by Morgan as a 2-year process since we have Robinson.

That is why you have to pass on his potential and take something more established.  I have already said that I would not take him at #8---but dropping 20+ pounds can add a lot of speed--but it is still a risk we cannot afford to take. I thought (when I first expressed interest in him at 280) that he was doing what he did at the SR Bowl at nearly 300.  He could hold the edge and move inside on some downs.  Still, I think sacks are not a good stat because some, like Burns, throw caution to the wind and go for sacks.  I have even seen some of these elite pass rushers stop or quit when they get stonewalled, instead of pursuing the play until the whistle. I have seen people get sacks when 2 other teammates pressured the QB to the player who makes the stop as the third to arrive at the party.   

Pressures is a better stat.   asked for one player with double digits sacks who was not a sack master in college, and without digging, I have 2.   Linville is basically right and I get the point he is making--but my point was accurate.  He asked for one name and I gave him 2 by thinking back and then  checking stats.  It is not common and we cannot take risks.
