Shemar Stewart Discussion

I posted this article in a couple threads, but I thought it might help some warm up to the idea of drafting Stewart with our first pick.

So Stewart played at a beefed up 290lb and lined up at 4i for Texas A&M this year. He pretty easily (one offseason) leaned up to 267lb for the combine. 
 

People obviously point to his lack of production, and it shouldn’t be ignored. But what would his stats look like if he had played at 270lb as a traditional 4-3 DE or a power rushing OLB this year? 
 

Plus, for a team as lacking on the defensive line as we are, I love Stewart’s versatility. He can operate as a strong side OLB on rushing downs and move in to DE on passing downs.

Wonnum and Clowney are both under contract one more year here. We need a plan, and I think we could do a lot worse than Stewart.

I don't buy into this concept that a high major P5 coaching staff would play an elite NFL caliber athlete in a role that would lessen his impact. I also don't buy into this concept that you overdraft underperforming high level athletes on the hopes that you can coach them into productivity. There's a time and a place to draft these types and IMO it ain't in the first two rounds of the draft.

These types are the prototypical NFL busts.

The dude had 4.5 sacks in 3 years. I don’t care how athletic he is, there’s absolutely NO WAY I’m drafting that guy. Honestly, how is it even possible to only get 4.5 sacks when you’re an athletic freak like that? No thanks.

I followed Shemar even in high school. I thought he would eventually be a 5 tech only because he doesn’t get around good OT as a pure edge rusher. Now, he didn’t grow into that 5tech, but he still can’t close the deal as a rusher. He’s going to be an edge setting 4-3 end and is going to put out modest sack #. It’s worth a 4-3 team to pick in the 20s-40s because there aren’t that many pure 4-3 ends in the draft and really becoming harder to find. Great draft for 5T, 3T, 1T tho and decent depth for pure 0 nose.

Great post, Shemar is definitely a player I think our front office is going to scout and consider heavily. If we could trade back to the 14-18 range and add a few picks in the draft I would be pumped.

At worst he becomes an upgrade to Wonnum.  At best, he becomes a poor man's Myles Garrett. His ceiling is high, his productivity is low.  HOWEVER--it works both ways.  If players are All Americans in college and the bust in the NFL, there are a ton of UDFAs that become stars.  In other words, I would not put too much on college performance when evaluating any player.  I like him--put him in the Sawyer (Ohio St), Jackson (Ark) category, but Stewart is the most impressive athlete.

Go down the list of good rushers in the NFL and find me one with single digit college sacks.

A guy doesn't have to be an All-American caliber college producer to project well but this guy but up 3rd or 4th guy off the bench numbers as a starter. That's alarming as hell.

Will be interesting to see how he rises after the combine.  In the COMBINE PREDICTIONS thread, I predicted he would have a great combine and the Panthers would draft him--it seemed like a stretch at the time--

Yeah, traditional media is going to pump him up heavily. Media tends to be overly reactionary, NFL front offices already knew how freaky of an athlete Shemar was. Same situation of elite traits and poor production will carry his draft conversation. All it takes is one team to fall in love with the potential, Travon Walker went 1st overall off his traits. If there is one position I value traits more then others it is DE, to survive in the NFL you need a blend of length, size, explosiveness and bend which is Shemar to a tee. People will ding him for his production which is valid, but give me Shemar over a production merchant in college football who has little to no NFL traits and can’t survive. Plus at the very worst Shemar is already a great run defender.

You mean like Danielle Hunter who had 4.5 sacks in three years at LSU and has had 37 sacks over the last three years in the NFL?  In fact, he has 99.5 for his career.

I can go down the list with double digit sacks in college and give you a list of busts.  Stewart has dropped 30 pounds.  He has athleticism.

I get the risk and probably, if I were the GM, would not pull the trigger on a player with those stats in the first round.  We can't gamble during days 1 and 2 this year.  If he is there in the third, yes.
