The Last Airbender

“The Last Airbender” is an agonizing experience in every category I can think of and others still waiting to be invented.” - Roger Ebert

Not since Kyle MacLachlan’s whispered voice-overs about the worm and the spice and the worm IS the spice in “Dune” has a fantasy franchise tripped all over itself trying, simply, to please a fan base while creating a new one. -Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune

It’s bad enough that this is one of those glossy CGI monstrosities, utterly divorced from anything resembling reality; transferred needlessly to 3-D, it’s just plain ugly.

The script is so incomprehensible, it’s often difficult to follow, despite several instances of characters stopping whatever they’re doing to explain what’s going on. -Christy Lemire, AP

M. Night Shyamalan’s retrofit produces the drabbest, darkest, dingiest movie of any sort I’ve seen in years. You know something is wrong when the screen is filled with flames that have the vibrancy of faded Polaroids. It’s a known fact that 3D causes a measurable decrease in perceived brightness, but “Airbender” looks like it was filmed with a dirty sheet over the lens. -Ebert again

Every time he meditates or is about to fight, the kid does a little Tae Kwan Do dance, a martial arts demonstration. -Orlando Sentinel

Also bizarre is the manner in which the warring parties fight. A fire bender, say, will toss a fireball at an earth bender, who will throw up a wall of dirt and block it. Meanwhile the fire bender will stand there and wait while the earth bender hits him with a rock or something. It’s using elements as rock-paper-scissors, but done by way of a sort of advanced form of martial arts. Why wait for your enemy? Why not just hit him in the head with a shovel while he’s standing there? -AZ Central

When he talks, he reminds you of the clumsy boy from the bad Star Wars movies. “Remember, your chi will warm you!” -Orlando Sentinel

As for the airbending talent that makes the kid so desirable: It’s kind of like having leaf-blowers shoot out of your hands. Useful for yard work, perhaps, but not a whole lot of fun. -Christy Lemire, AP

Another point is that Aang is raised in the Buddhist tradition, so he can harm no one. So for all the choreographed fights and CG action, this is the most bloodless PG movie one will ever see. If water crystals incapacitating warriors are your thing, than you’ll love these ice sculptures. -Hollywood Reporter

Let’s just be honest: M. Night Shyamalan is an idiot. -Metromix

now i want to download it.

It's obvious that there's not a movie critic that has watched an anime series. Dragonball Z would kill them. lol

Rotten Tomatoes gave it 7% and, why? Mostly because it's only Part 1. And they didn't get how Earth is now only 4 nations. Hello? It's not real!

All this just makes me more eager to see it. I love M. Night Shyamalan's movies although he seems to be a "love him or hate him" director. Hope to see it this weekend.

I saw it at the theaters with my son. We are HUGE fans of the animated series. I didn't think it was bad, but M Night Shamawankonhiswagealon was the mistake. He let some import stuff out and...surprise the ending was stupid because he fugged with it.

Anyway, a lot of people didn't know it is a 3 part series because they didn't watch the show. I'm curious if they'll do books 2 and 3. If they do, hopefully M Night won't get the job.

My wife rented this for the kids and even they walked away from it after 20 minutes. Completely boring and stupid, poorly acted and too much brooding. Seriously, spending a dollar for it at Redbox is sending Hollywood the wrong message.

There were some things that were nice to look at in the effects, that's about it.

I think he is supposed to do all 3 movies. I won't watch it if his name is on it

my wife told me she heard rumors that they are going to make toph deaf instead of blind. if they do this it will be utterly retarded, since that is a pretty major contributing plot point. i searched around on the web and cant find anything to substantiate the rumor.

the only thing that bugged me about the movie was the changing of the pronunciation of the names.

    • He made some excellent throws but he always has made some excellent throws here and there. I don't know what to think, which is what I was apprehensive about. Is he going to have a decent downfield game? Because okay Legette dropped one, but someone was giving stats prior to the bye or during it where he had two downfield completions and one of them was the jump ball that is just launched and fingers are crossed that our guy comes down with it, and yesterday we saw that again. The Russell Wilson school of downfield passing.  I don't feel like that is sustainable, but at the same time you have to do Something to make the defense understand they have to defend that downfield throws. Like i said, confused.  I guess I'm going to review the game for myself and look closely at his mechanics and stuff because if he actually fixed that stuff it explains the better throws. And that has been my biggest objection, or what I see as the thing that makes or breaks his chances, that unorthodox dropback and tippy toe action and not having his feet set which limits velocity etc etc.
    • The negative Nancy in me (or objective?) says that they had a bye week to prepare for the Chiefs. However, it’s one thing to have a good plan and it’s another to actually execute it. For all the flack he’s received (from me as well), Bryce seemingly has put his head down and worked his tail off and his play is giving me hope. The first 18-game Bryce showed no progression whatsoever. He gets benched, comes back, and has shown steady progress every week he has started. I think I’m starting to see what the Bryce lovers and unconditional defenders were saying all along, and I hope he can show that on a regular basis for the sake of our QB1 position.
    • Yeah, we could still very well end up 4-13 with the 2nd pick.   I think LVR has the inside track for 1, with only a JAX team as a team on docket that could be beatable.
