He's not a good long-term option, but neither is Jake. If we're looking for a caretaker QB to manage the game and allow our running game to dominate like it should, then Moore might be a better option than Delhomme. Delhomme takes a lot of chances, focuses in on Smitty, etc. Moore as a young guy might be able to play within himself a little better.

However, if we want a QB that's going to win games for us, rather than not lose games, then Moore is a poor option. Delhomme would do better - he's high risk/high reward. If we're trying to find a quarterback to win games, I think we should look outside the franchise.

Jake 2.0

Wow dude, end yourself. It's quite obvious you have no knowledge of quarterbacks or football itself if you are calling Moore "Jake 2.0" he is kind of the polar opposite. He can scramble and is the type of guy that can excel in the rollout PA plays and chuck it to smitty.

I would rather have moore in there. Mccown throws too many picks and that's not what we need. I want a QB that plays like Garrard from last year. The less picks we throw, the better. He can make a play happen with his feet and is accurate. That's what I want and moore is more of that type than mccown, but really, both of em' throw picks. Sooooo... we need to draft Josh Freeman.

To everyone saying Moore isn't ready yet: When will he be? And how will we know? I think actually playing the game would not only be the greatest indicator of a quarterback's proficiency, but also his greatest preparation to be a starting quarterback.

It seems a lot of people on this very board didn't think Matt Ryan had what it takes to be an NFL quarterback. Those that did speak favorably of him thought he wouldn't make a significant impact during his rookie year (and for good reason: most rookie quarterbacks don't).

I've been a huge supporter of Jake throughout the years, and though I'm not totally sold on benching him, I think Moore could come in and play just as well. There is a reason Dallas was so disappointed when we claimed him off waivers; there is a reason Ron Jaworski drools over his mechanics.

Everyone knows that he made a huge impact in the three games he started last year against Dallas, Seattle and Tampa Bay. Stats notwithstanding, the players themselves spoke about how much of a leader Matt was, and how he handled himself with poise. He played pretty well in all of these games, which is impressive considering he was relegated to playing with our second team receivers and didn't even go through training camp (his lack of playing time with our first team is one reason I think he played poorly this preseason).

While I know they are exceptions to the rule, I can't help but think Moore could have just as much success as rookies like Flacco or Ryan. We have a system in place that would be beneficial to a rookie or lesser-experienced quarterback. Taking the pressure of the quarterback are two amazing running backs, one of the NFL's best receivers, and then several more very good receivers behind him. That Jake, a veteran, couldn't get it done with this offensive cast is amazing to me.

I know and appreciate what Jake has done for us in the past. But did he really win us any games this season? In the absence of a running game, when Jake has had to bear the brunt of the workload, he has failed (Tampa Bay, Oakland and Arizona are perfect examples). Jake did bail us out at the ends of a few games, for which I'm grateful, but would we really be in that spot if we had competent quarterback play for the entire game.

It really pains me to say this, but it's worth seeing what McCown or Moore could do. I know that much of our offensive struggles this year have been a result of playcalling, and I agree that needs to be addressed. But right now, I think we need to let Moore or McCown build a relationship with the first team. Jake didn't build a relationship with Smitty overnight.

To the old veterans: who can honestly say, before he played his first game as a Panther, that they thought Jake was the better option at quarterback?

We need to draft a future STAR or sign one (none to be found this year, sans Cassel). We don't need a Jake 2.0 who was fumbling around as a backup then got their chance. If McCown was THAT good...he'd be starting. Moore never proved to me that he is a star and I don't want to take a chance that he's not. I don't care if the Cowboys thought highly of him. I also understand that you have to start somewhere and that many backups have become STARS...I just don't see it in Moore and I'll GLADLY be wrong about that.

I just don't see how anyone can say Moore is or is not the option without letting him play a little while first.

But since you're such a shrewd talent evaluator, I'm curious what you thought of Matt Cassell before he became a star? Or our very own Jake Delhomme, for that matter?

Really good post, I'd forgotten Jaws drooling over Moore.

I have two reservations about him:

1. Arm Strength. He was WAY under throwing the deep ball the year he bailed us out. Literally receivers stopping and waiting for the ball to show up.

2. Preseason showing this year. He looked really really bad. Bad throws, bad decisions.

But, you can't ignore that he went 2-1 as a full time starter with decent stats (not counting garbage time when we'd send him in to hail mary a few at the end). Guy also managed to supplant Baz, which was pretty interesting, considering how well liked he was.

Smitty also seems to like him, which is a pretty big positive.

Look at the stats, everything prior to this game said panthers where the advantage team and all the media agreed. But everybody forgets one thing the HUMAN EMOTION facture and those can't be included in stats. Its a team game and a team win or a team loss. Had they come back in 4th quater and won nobody would be complaining. Be a true FAN and except the bad with the good. Jake is a good quarter back and John Fox is a good coach sometimes jake may let his emotions get the better of him as do some on the offensive and defensive line. My heart goes out to all the players it was a tough team loss. I wish them nothing but the best for next season and I hope everybody returns. Hold strong thru the growing pains and move forward.

Sorry for your loss panthers but I still support them 100%.
