Had some Octoberfest for the first time (sam Adams), and having some Blue Moon pumpkin ale tonight. Any recommendations for tom night? I am just going to the supermarket but I am not a beer knerd at all. So any advice would be appreciated.

Did you enjoy the Oktoberfest? How about the Blue Moon? Any other beers you've enjoyed recently?

If you want to try something a little hoppier, Sierra Nevada's Pale Ale is a great example of the style. It is a bit more hoppy and bitter than the Oktoberfest of Blue Moon, however.

A brown ale might also be something you could consider. Sierra Nevada's Tumbler should still be in stores, and it's a great fall beer. I promise I'm not trying to pimp Sierra Nevada -- it's just that they make some of the better beers you'll find in grocery stores.

For a hoppy yet balanced beer, try Rastafa Rye Ale by Bluepoint Brewing Co.

Also Terrapin's Rye Pale Ale.

Two very good choices. I really enjoy both of them.

I think the 1554 is one of the better dark beers you could have at a BBQ. Not that you should resign yourself to lighter styles in hot weather, but when it's 95 degrees, most will reach for something more refreshing. I think the 1554 has those nice malty, chocolatey flavors while still being very refreshing and -- dare I say it -- drinkable.

I've had just one bottle of Three Philosophers, but I really enjoyed it. I need to pick it up again.

If you can find Brooklyn Brewery's Octoberfest, buy it.

I haven't had that one yet, but it's hard to go wrong with anything made by the Brooklyn Brewery.

For a hoppy yet balanced beer, try Rastafa Rye Ale by Bluepoint Brewing Co.

I haven't had the Bluepoint, but I love Terrapin's Rye Pale Ale. If you're a rye guy, try the Founders Red's Rye. If you want a really big beer brewed with rye, try He'Brew Lenny's Bittersweet R.I.P.A. That might be the best rye beer I've had.

In terms of a locally made beer that tastes like Budweiser/Miller or Yuengling, try either the Mecklenburger (helles lager) or Copper (an altbier, or lagered ale, that tastes similar to, but better than, Yuengling) by Olde Mecklenburg Brewery, in Charlotte. OMB's tasting room is open Thursday through Friday nights for several hours each night, and Saturday afternoons, and you can buy 1/2 liter and full liter growlers. They also sell their growlers throughout Charlotte at places including Total Wine, Healthy Home Market and Common Market. After your bottle deposit, a mini growler is only about $7, which gets you about 4 full pints, so it's a pretty good deal if you gravitate toward German-style lagers.

Other than that, Rock Bottom Brewpub is a great place to try different styles to determine which one you like the best before buying a 6-pack in a grocery store. You can usually get the bartender to let you "sample" at least a couple beers before having to buy a pint of one.

You guys can look into Sam Adams sampler packs. I would assume they have their summer 12-pack out right now. Most Sam Adams beers are very solid examples of their respective styles, and a good entry into the craft beer world.

Also, if you have a Total Wine nearby you might consider picking up a Great Lakes sampler pack. They are a brewery out of Cleveland that, like Sam Adams, makes some really solid beers. The 12-pack I bought contained a pale ale, an amber lager, a dortmunder lager, and a porter. If I'm not mistaken, none of those beers are ranked lower than an A- on the Beer Advocate site (which is also a great place to read up on a beer before you plunk down the money on something you may or may not like).

Oh, and Trader Joe's has some privately-labeled beers that are really pretty decent, especially considering most of them are $1 a bottle. I like the Vienna lager, the Hefeweizen, the Dunkelweizen and most of all the Stockyard Oatmeal Stout. There you can mix your own six-pack and not worry if you don't like one or two of them, because they're so cheap.

When branching out, don't be afraid to try new styles. When I first got into craft beer, I hated really bitter beers, like IPAs. I gravitated more toward the darker, maltier beers, like porters and stouts. But I've heard of others preferring the bitter stuff right off the bat.

Also, if you're not digging some of these other styles right away, consider finding a craft lager. Chances are, that's what you've been drinking (Bud, Miller, Coors, etc.). Instead of trying a new style, you might like to start by finding a craft version of a style you're used to and then comparing the two beers.

Your tastes will definitely change if you stick with it. Now, there's not a style I dislike. The flavors found in beer really run the gamut and it's more of a complex beverage than most realize. I sincerely believe there is a beer out there for everybody.

I don't know if the beer has been mentioned in here but I've been drinking Skull Coast IPA at the Panthers games and it is fuging fantastic. I think im going to have to get it on tap at home. It's called Maelstrom(sp) IPA. The double IPA was good the first time i had it but i didn't like it as much the 2nd time. I think you have to be a few beers deep to like that one. It's pretty strong. If you go to the games it is in section 502. I've also been enjoying this pumpkin beer at home but i can't remember the name. It has a generic looking label on it. It's just a picture of a pumpkin patch. I get it from the Common Market. I'll have a look what it's called when i get home and edit the name in.

Drinking a nice 12 pack of French Broad Brewing IPA as I type!

French Broad Brewing makes some really nice beers! I just finished a bomber of Wee-Heavy-Er. Love that beer, will drink it all autumn and winter. Now I'm on a Brooklyn Brewery Octoberfest.
