Picked up a 6 of Great Lakes Burning River Pale Ale.

A nice alternative to some of the bigger IPAs Ive been drinking. Nice hoppy flavor without the cutting bitterness but all of the citrus and hints of sweetness.

Anyone headed to the Brew Festival this weekend?

http://www.greatncbeerfestival.com/brewers

I really like Burning River, and pretty much all of the Great Lakes beers I've tried (especially their porter, the Edmund Fitzgerald).

I wanted to go to that festival, but I'm trying to spend a bit less on beer. Plus it seems like there's a festival every weekend next month. I'm going to Brewgrass in Asheville on Sept. 18.

Old Engine Oil (Harviestoun Brewery) - Heavy coffee flavor, thick as cough syrup, as black as Satan's asshole. Good stuff! Pick it up if you see it.

People's Porter (Foothills Brewing) - Not quite as thick, and more chocolate notes than anything else. Hand of God, though, after a couple of swallows it starts to taste sweet and salty like a peanut butter cup. Very enjoyable. You'll have to get a growler if you want to take it home though.

I never seem to see Old Engine Oil out, but I've heard good things. I did have the People's Porter at a festival earlier this year and really enjoyed it. I'd love to try their barrel-aged version. Speaking of barrel-aged, Foothills is selling bottles of barrel-aged Sexual Chocolate (their imperial stout) tomorrow. I'm thinking about driving up to Winston to get a few bottles.

Hey guys, just a heads up: they're not releasing the bourbon-barrel aged Sexual Chocolate until 4 p.m., and they're handing out wristbands at 3 p.m. Here's some more info from their Facebook page:

Foothills was so excited to have a beerfest in Winston-Salem, that we decided to do something a little extra special to celebrate the weekend...

4pm Friday August 27th

Approx 650 22oz Barrel Aged Sexual Chocolate bottles

$15 per, limit 4

ALSO available, 22oz Baltic Porter...

On tap in the brewpub will be BA Sexual Chocolate, BA Peoples porter, Baltic Porter, as well as our regular lineup...

Sadly, we will be unable to accomodate a tasting party for this event as the brewery will be unavailable due to another event...bottle wristbands do not grant access to the brewery area.

Wristbands will be distributed beginning at 3pm.

ENTRY TO THE BULIDING WILL BE FROM 4th ST ONLY! Please do not try to enter the rear of the building as it is an industrial work zone during daytime hours

some things i just wont do, even for good beer. Maybe Pizza Peel will get a keg., although, im a bit suspect of PPs tap beer. Their Founders Breakfast Stout on tap sucked. And i know that beer, as i probably drink 2-3 cases a year out of bottles.

I'm not a beer chaser either. But I had the day off for a doctor's appointment anyway, so I figured why not? I'm not into trading, but I might have to start -- some of the trade offers people are putting out for barrel-aged Sexual Chocolate are absolutely ridiculous.

I did swap a bottle with a guy there for a barrel-aged Blackbeerd from Coast in Charleston. Probably could have gotten more out of that, but I've really wanted to try that one.

I'm looking forward to Breakfast Stout. I got a four-pack last year, but something seemed off. I want to give it another shot.

strange, ive never had a bad bottle. Like i mentioned before, the few i had at Pizza Peel didnt taste right to me.

Oskar Blues Ten Fiddy is damn good too...poo, i had another recently that i thought was as good as FBS, but i cant remember which it was...

I love Ten-FIDY, but I just think it's a little pricey for what it is. I think Old Rasputin is one of the best out there, and it can be had for $8.99 a four-pack (compared with the $14.99 I think I paid for a four-pack of the Oskar Blues).

I really think I got a bad bottle of FBS and can't wait to try it again, as I love coffee stouts. Dieu du Ciel's Peche Mortel is a great imperial coffee stout, especially if you love really roasted coffee flavors. Everyone says the coffee in FBS is really pronounced, which is why I think I got a bad bottle -- the one I tasted had very little coffee flavor, and the little coffee I tasted was more similar to really cheap coffee. I'll give it another go, for sure. Founders makes some incredible beers.

Which reminds me, I've still got a couple bottles of Kentucky Breakfast Stout I need to drink. :)

ten-Fidy is expensive and i almost said that...

Yes, the coffee is pronounced. The draft i had, it wasnt.

Personally, I usually drink one of two beverages with steak: either a nice cabernet, or (more likely) a well-hopped IPA or double IPA.

I also pepper the hell out of my steaks, and I like that the hoppiness of the IPA can stand up to that. Dogfish Head 90-minute, I think, goes perfectly with steaks. It's obviously got the hops, but it's also very well balanced.

Mmm, big steaks and big beers. Sounds good.

What'd you end up drinking, Inimicus?

Some friends and I went to our usual place, where I had a Foothills Seeing Double IPA and an Urthel Saisonniere. I really enjoyed the Foothills.

I'm taking the plunge into beer trading and shipping out one barrel-aged Sexual Chocolate for a Cigar City Hunahpu Imperial Stout and a Three Floyds Dark Lord 2010, then I'm shipping another out for a Three Floyds Dark Lord 2009 and a Deschutes Abyss. I can't wait.
