Mentioned in another thread, Fox and Trgovac prefer to assign corners to cover a certain side of the field rather than a certain receiver.

Mike Minter suggested a few days back that it would be better this game to abandon that philosophy and assign Chris Gamble to handle Larry Fitzgerald.

Instead, the coaches stuck with the usual practice, and so here we are

I really thought that the way Green Bay ran their secondary was awesome. It's ballsy, but with the right personnel it's very effective. I guess it worked a little better last year than it did this year, but if you're not familiar with it, they basically have their two corners playing about 1 yard off the receivers, and most of the time they're given no safety help over the top.

Last year they had some streak going where they hadn't allowed a touchdown catch by a WR or something. I don't exactly remember. Obviously, to be that aggressive, you'd want some killer CB's.

Mr. Scot, what do you think the chances are of something like that working here in Carolina? Possibly with a little more safety help. I'm thinking of a base defense being a Cover-2 man, so that you have the deep safety to help if the receiver gets away deep on a double move or something. And that way, your corner can jump the shorter routes. If it was implemented and ended up being effective, it should help the pass rush as well...as there wouldn't be someone wide open right off the bat for the first 5 yards of his route.

I think it would play to our strengths a little better as our D-Line is nowhere near what it was in 03, and our secondary is actually fairly good.

If you play zone you have to be aggressive and attack the ball. You don't let somebody make the catch and then just try to tackle the guy. Ever wonder why our leading interceptor was a middle linebacker?

You notice the best zone defense force turnovers. Tampa Bay, Indy, those guys attack the ball. You can't expect to stop the offense if you don't attack the ball on a zone defense.

they lined fitz over marshal so many fuging times and he flat owned him. marshal is not the next cb for us either. honestly cb is now priority #1 in the draft unless somehow freeman outa k state magicly falls to us in the 2nd. hr has all the tools, but likely will not unless all the the big 3 jrs come out.

Bull you're exactly right. Every zone has holes in it. The key is in not giving that QB time to find them. Playing soft combined with little to no pressure from the front 4 is going to result in your defense getting shredded every time.

If there's one thing I can say I'm fairly certain of, it's that there's going to be some defensive changes this off-season. This has to be the single most disappointing loss in Panther history. Sure, there have been games where we've been blown out by a bigger margin (Anyone else in attendance for that 42-0 Falcons win), but on this stage, the whole situation... it was a big let down. I know the offense didn't exactly put on a show, but JR, Hurney, and Fox want this team to be stout defensively. I think last night's game will finally be the straw that broke the camel's back for Trgovac.

I think the Packers fired their DC, though I'm not sure it was a fair firing.

As to that scheme, I'd actually love to see our DBs playing close. Granted, part of the reason Green Bay got away with that was that Charles Woodson and Al Harris are both very good CBs, but still.

You know that brings up a point. Is it possible our DBs were coached not to try and jump routes this season? I seem to recall more than a few times when I thought they could have but didn't. Makes me wonder if they were coached to play it ultra-safe this year :confused:
