Which linebackers will make it

The Panthers won't spend more than the minimum to add a veteran LB, so the Panthers starting LB's will come from the players already on hand. The Panthers seem to have 5 good LB's, likely starters Anderson, Beason, and Connor (the ABC's of linebacking), a quality veteran backup LB in Williams, and promising rookie OLB/DE-Eric Norwood.

The opening at LB might come for the 6th LB spot, on the roster now they have a grab bag of LB's (Culberson, Senn, Ivey, etc) who's chief value is as a special teams body. DE-Hilee Taylor could get the 7th LB spot (if they carry 1), because he has the same type skills as Norwood (making him a good backup for Norwood), and they probably don't have the roster room for Taylor as a 5th or 6th DE (if you count him behind Norwood).

The Panthers might find a LB dropped at the final cuts, who might be an improvement at the 6th LB spot. I've been beating the drum much to much for the Panthers to try and add the Broncos 3rd year, 5th safety, SS-Josh Barrett (6-1 3/4, 225, 4.35-40, 1.50-10). I don't expect him to suddenly become a starter, but if he shifts to OLB (like Thomas Davis did), with his great speed, he could be a good backup OLB/special teams player this year, and maybe more next year.

i agree with this with the exception of a few things.

1) put culberson in for davis. put davis on the pup list.

2) take of one or two of the DBs. either francisco or pugh won't make it and either cj wilson or stanford won't make it.

3) add in todd carter as KOS. we won't be relying on kasay for kickoffs.

4) i doubt we have steve justice on anything but the PS. he might make the 53 man roster but he won't be on the game day roster. if he's on the roster pettiti won't. i don't see us going with more than 9 OL.

5) we may very well go with 2 FBs again.

Also David Gettis will find a spot on this roster. Correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think Fox has ever cut a draft pick in their first year.

First one to pop into my head was Atillyah Ellisson from a few years ago. 3rd round DT that didn`t last past TC. I`m pretty sure there have been a few others too.

I think Josh Barrett (Denver Broncos) would be perfect in a cover 2 defense, big enough to play OLB, but with better speed than most CB's.

He would be a perfect fit at the "joker" position in a 4-2-5 defense, because he's bigger, faster, and younger than CB-Dante Wesley was last year. He would even be a better fit this season, when both safeties have CB experience, giving the Panthers a OLB that could slip back to SS, allowing the Panthers to have 3 CB's (and 2 safeties), without having to substitute. I would also love to see his 4.35-40 speed blitzing around end, plus he was a big hitter in college.

I can't remember which commentator it was that said it at Barrett's Combine, but after watching him laughing and smiling with another player after running his 40, he said it would hurt him in the draft, because teams wouldn't think he was serious about football. I would have been laughing and doing back flips if I could run that fast at his size.

I still hope the Panthers can find a way to pick him up, I think he would be a good fit.

    • They can’t reasonably fire a rookie head coach who was saddled with one of the worst first overall QBs of all time. And at times made said QB look decent to serviceable.  If the team was 3-11 at this point next season, fire everyone.
