Press conference today to announce Moose's retirement

Sam Mills Fan

Recommended Posts

If on the field performances were the mark, then Moose would have done more for us than Mills who obviously served on the staff and was memoralized for his battle with cancer and inspiration to the team and organization.

I thought this was the case as well, but someone recently told me that this statue was made before Mills had cancer. I didn't think this was so -- but maybe I'm wrong.

Anyone know for sure?

Edit: Found this.

Nobody knew when the statue was erected that Sam Mills, a man who was so fastidious about taking care of himself, would soon be fighting for his life.

Mills was the metaphoric face of the Panthers' birth...

He was a small guy on the field with a bunch of big guys who wore his heart and passion on his sleeve and let that fuel his athletic ability... He was an overall leader in the locker room and a role model off the field...

THAT is why he got a statue...

These qualities exist in Moose and others, but none of them had what Sam Mills had, and to even put anyone else on his personal level of importance to our team identity while he played for us is kind of absurd... Smith and Peppers are the only ones who have even come close, and one could maybe argue for Jake too...

Kasay is the only other one I see getting a statue at this point, and that is because of the years of service he has given us, and for his personality on and off the field...

Moose was always one of my favorite panthers. I'm sad to see him retire, but it was the right time. I don't think we will retire his number or give him a statue as many have said, but I don't believe he will be completely snubbed. We will honor him in some way.
