Press conference today to announce Moose's retirement

You know, as lethal as 89 has been, the Moose of '99 and '04 has to be in the top 5 years a receiver has had here if not top 3. Obviously the '05 campaign for 89 was the best and may never be topped, but damn if Moose wasn't one of the top couple of receivers in the league in those two years.

He was a great player, and an even better person which is why I believe his number should be retired. When you retire a number it is because you couldn't see anyone wearing that number again and living up to the individual that wore it previously. Well to be honest I don't think any Panther will ever be able to block like Moose or be able to complement Smitty like Moose did. Please read his credential's so you can understand what this man has done.

Here are some of Moose's credential's

2004 Led the NFL in Touchdowns with 16

2004 Pro Bowl

2004 AP All-Pro

2004 College & Pro Football Weekly All-Pro

2004 Football Digest All-Pro Second Team

2004 Pro Football Weekly All-NFL

2004 Pro Football Weekly All-NFC

2005 Led the Chicago Bears in Receiving

2006 Led the Chicago Bears in Receiving

Ranked #1 in Receptions for the Panthers

Ranked #1 in Yards for the Panthers

Tied #1 in Touchdowns for the Panthers

Ranked #2 in 100 Yard Games for the Panthers

Ranked #2 in Longest Reception for the Panthers

Ranked #2,3 for the most Receptions in a single season for the Panthers

Ranked #3 in Scoring for the Panthers

Ranked #3 for the most Yards in a single season for the Panthers

Ranked #3,4,6 for the most Yards in a single game for the Panthers

Ranked #5 in Yard's Per Reception for the Panthers

Was Commentator for NFL Europe during 2002 and 2003 offseason

Won a Chicago Emmy Award for Outstanding Achievement for Sports Programs

Now if these statistics won't get your number retired then I don't know what will, and if somehow his number doesn't get retired......well then I would hate to be the player that has to suit up in #87 on Sunday's because he has some big shoes to fill.

I'll never forget the image on a sports illustrated mag cover during the superbowl campaign after we beat Philly in the championship with Moose down on one knee in the endzone putting that finger to his mouth and hushing the crowd after he caught that horrible Jake lob for a touchdown! One of the best pictures in Panther history. I'm not one who agrees he should get a statue, but if he did, I would certainly hope it would be that image, that would add some awesome mystique to the stadium. Long live Moose!!!

A statue of that pose would be awesome.
