Today's Office Debate: Who/what killed Grunge?

To me, once something goes mainstream it's the death of cool. I know grunge more or less killed hair metal and a part of me is grateful but not sure what did in grunge itself.

Was it movies like Mall Rats or Singles or was there tv series that tried to capitalize and thus, a musical movement is gone?

All new bands started sounding the same and Rap Rock. Kids went from Self Loathing to Self Destruction.

The rise of Rap and R&B, I think. No longer were angst ridden white suburban teens banging their heads and rocking out. They all started looking like K-fed and flashing gang signs. Dumbasses.

With the state of the nation I was expecting a Blues revival, still waiting on that

Courtney Love. And I don't mean to say she killed Kurt. What I mean is that once she came to the forefront as an attention-*****, drunk and drugged, demanding to be accepted as a celebrity and artist, the gig was up.

Up until then, there was some dignity and a downright earnestness to the music. Afterwards, a few artists still did good work, but the movement was dead.
