FYI davis is not one of the three players the Panthers can't replace

if i was john fox (i am john fox irl) i'd have anderson play WLB and have an open competition on the other end but lol fox (me) is retarded

Exactly.

I don't know why everyone has been so down on Anderson... Anderson was in a bad position. Although he's a great athlete, I don't think he was one of Foxy's "guys"... Same reason Moore wasn't given a shot earlier. Diggs was a Fox guy. On the other side, we had a 1st rounder who took a few years to develop into a dominant player last year in TD.

How was he going to play?

When he has played, the guy makes plays. His rookie year he came in as a pass rush specialist and got a few sacks, I remember against New Orleans in particular. He's also made a few plays in the passing game. He got extended time last year, and he showed he's a player. I don't think there is a lot of drop-off from Davis to Anderson, if we move him to WLB.

If we put Connor in on either outside spot, I'm concerned about his coverage ability. I honestly think, as someone suggested in another thread, we could move Beason to one OLB spot, Anderson the other, Connor in the middle. If Beas stays in the middle, I would like to see Norwood play opposite of Anderson. Whatever configuration gives us the most athletic and playmaking ability on the field...

And BTW, I like Jordan Senn and Morty Ivy's potential as well.

well we actually have no depth at WLB right now and if anderson goes down beason will probably have to move outside.

Let's just say we move Anderson plays weakside, Connor/Norwood at strongside, then Beason in the middle. Then we'll have Connor/Norwood, our amazing pickup from Chicago Jamar Williams, and Mortty Ivy as backups.

But seriously. We could be worse off than this. Just wish we kept Diggs...

What Panthers team have you been watching? Anderson has played great the past few seasons when given the opportunity.

He was a mediocre NFL linebacker that had never started more than 2 games in a season until last season.

Last season, he was arguably the Preseason MVP that people thought was really going to step up. Then he was a complete flop when he played in the first half of the season. It wasn't until the last third of the season or so IIRC when he started to show some flashes. I vaguely remember him playing well against the Vikings I think.

I don't know, I think he's one of these guys like Dante Wesley that seemed to stick around here for a long time and people kept saying was about to break out but never does. I hope I'm wrong. I don't think it will matter much anyway, because I see our three starters as Beason/Connor/Williams.

He didn't really fit our scheme until the Meeks switch. He was a Whip LB in college, moreso a Safety/LB hybrid(the playmaking position in Foster's Defense). He played Strongside early in the season and didn't do that well. He did however do really good at Weakside. The vikings game stands out as well as the Giants Game. Like most guys who have only started spot duty due to injury he didn't get much real game experience until late in the season which is also the reason he got better during the last 3 games.

Secondly, he's already slated to start anyway, plus his interview on panthers.com says he's bulked up for the strongside switch. So who knows? I'd prefer him at Weakside than Connor atm.

You mean the 2 sacks he got in th elast game of the year against Saints backups because the Saints had locked up the Division, a bye, and were playing for absolutely nothing? And they were the only 2 sacks of the year. Good thing he was able to grab 1 against the Vikes this year to bring his 4 year career total to 3.

You might want to check that recollector. I think it needs calibrating.

+1

And I agree that he did little of note in his first years here. But I would remind whoever said that Diggs was a Fox guy, Diggs was a FA and Anderson was drafted. Anderson was the Fox guy of the two. He just didn't fit at the SLB and couldn't beat out Davis on the other side.

I'm not worried about WLB, I think he'll do fine. And I think Bernadeau would be good enough in Kalil's place. The player I think we would miss the most on offense is Moore. Even though he still has a lot to prove, having to rely on a rookie this year would be very unsettling for a team that just purged a ton of veteran leadership.

When attempting to correct people, it really helps to know your facts. At least one of those sacks was against the giants. Good fail.

Come on Pat, it's not the end of the world.

In 2005 Kris Jenkins went out in the first game after missing all of 2004. That was supposed to be a sign that we were headed for another bad year, as the line had fallen apart in 2004. But in 2005, we had depth (which included talent developed in 2004) and the line never skipped a beat en route to helping the team achieve a record of 11-5.

History helps sometimes. :)

I would say Smith and DeAngelo + Stewart = also not replaceable on this team... If Smith goes down, we're screwed... If both DeAngelo and Stewart go down, we're screwed.

I would be you're gonna see Beason at WLB, Connor at MLB and Andersen at SLB.

    • There's some big assumptions in here - first, I think Canales HAS helped Bryce a poo ton. To pretend he hasn't is asinine. Has he fixed him?  I mean, the dude looks like he could perhaps be a backup or low-end starter now, whereas he looked like he didn't belong in the NFL a year ago. You're talking about a coach that brought one of the worst NFL QBs of all time to a point where he may actually be a low-end starter. That IS impressive. Second, the bolded. Come on - given the offense, the dude is far from "trending towards bust." He definitely needs work but he's shown an impressive ability to get open. He's contributing to an anemic offense. The dude is our leading receiver (though he'll be #2 in yardage by end of season by a little, as Thielen does better per game).  As to his coaching, he had this team competing and believing against 3 of the better teams in the NFL, despite the lack of talent, and despite our QB situation.  Yes, things fell apart vs DAL, and he was outcoached. But that will happen with young coaches IMO.  I don't think it indicates he cant' be better. The idea of "pulling off the bandage" is ridiculous. Who would want to coach here if we fired this guy after one season?
    • Whatever they are in totality the cowboys are beat up all to hell on both sides of the ball and even that was too much for lil Bryce to overcome.  Bryce defenders have to hype up every other team and trash every other part of the panthers just because of the situation they’ve put themselves in.
    • JB had a first round grade in the eyes of a lot scouts based on HIS TALENT LEVEL. If not for the injury he would have gone higher in the draft, possibly between the middle and the end of round 1. To get him just before the 50th pick is a steal. He'd be on a 4 year deal. You can't even renegotiate until the end of the season 3. You're basically paying him nothing for 3 seasons. I don't buy into all back are interchangeable. No they're not. You have average backs, good backs, then your great-exceptional backs. The latter category doesn't grow on trees. If a back is special it pays to keep them. The key is knowing the difference between the first two categories and the third one.
